I must admit that I really had little interest in seeing this movie. I waited, but kept hearing only good things about it so we headed to the theatre. Are we glad we did? I must give a resounding YES!! The movie is excellent.

Having lived in SF back in the day, I knew this story and the story of the Gay fight very well. The semi-documentary methodology for this film got a little tedious with the main film trying to match the newsreel, but it is a compelling human story that is best told with the reverse chronology portions. Many Americans are quite unfamiliar with this story.
The real actors are uncannily matched to the real flesh and blood people they are meant to represent. A very good honorific to an important minor American figure, but my fifth star wasn't given due to the film appearance only. The filmmakers failed to make a convincing meld and it became distracting.

I loved learning the history of San Franciso. Well-written story and excellent acting. Penn made me really believe he was Harvey Milk, a gay man with a real fight for gay rights.

This is the first time I've ever taken the time to write a review, but this movie was phenomenal and it's so important that as many people see it as possible. It promotes a great understanding of the gay movement. It exposes the homophobia, lack of education, and self-hatred that is behind bigotry. It shows the idiocy that gay marriage is still illegal in many states. The acting was outstanding and there is lots of fascinating footage from San Francisco and photos/video from the movement itself. There is also a compelling love story.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a good movie worthy of accolades. Sean Penn is brilliant as Harvey Milk! Gus Van Sant managed to capture an era and a spirit that moved me to tears. Let this movie be a wake up call, a reminder, that this fight is not over. The GLBT community is still fighting for equal rights, for acceptance and for freedom from hate speech. Proposition 8 is a very real reminder that, though we may have made some progress, we still have bigotry and hate in America. It seems as though the GLBT community is the last group of minorities that continue to feel like second class citizens today. Let this movie inspire you to embrace the GLBT community and to fight for equal rights for everyone.

Having now seen "Milk" and "The Wrestler" over the last two weeks, I'm glad I don't have to cast a vote for Best Actor. The art of bring to life these character roles that Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke portrayed (one real, one fictional), were beyond spectacular. In the movie, a young man calls Harvey Milk at a point when he is ready to kill himself rather than be sent to a place that is going to "Cure" him. It made chills down my spine. I was 16 gay and alone in Ohio when I tried to call the Advocate for help. It was the first and only thing gay that I had heard of and I needed to know someone else that felt the same and I did. Milk protrayed that time acurately, honestly and with heart. Sean Penn was phenominal. Thank you for getting it out into the regular theaters!

Sean Penn is spooky in this performance...I had to keep reminding myself I was not watching Harvey himself. The documentary footage brought me right back to that time period - a scary, uncertain time for all human rights. I live in a very conservative town and the theater was a mishmash of people: elders, teens, couples, singles - and not one of them walked out - a testament to how much things have changed over the past 30 years.
Sean ranks up there with best!

All the performances are terrific, but Sean Penn outdoes himself and creates one of the most moving and believable characterizations in recent history. I had been waiting to see this for several months. Sean Penn WAS Harvey Milk, nailing both his appearance and his unbounded liveliness. While his part isn't very large, Josh Brolin achieved an equally challenging task: making Dan White sympathetic. Instead of making him into a bigoted monster, Brolin portrayed him as an overwhelmed and tormented man who envied Harvey's success and popularity and probably just needed a friend . Emile Hirsch's performance confirmed that his knockout in Into The Wild was not a fluke, and James Franco proved he can be way more than just an attractive face. Overall, an excellent film readily deserving of all 8 of its Oscar nominations.

I never thought I would like a movie this much that is about homosexuality. I was really afraid that they would overdo the sex scenes and I would get grossed out. But the underlying theme is the reason this movie is so good, not the idea of being gay. This movie was absolutely amazing. All of the actors made a brave choice taking part in this film. But when the script and directing are this great, it really wasn't a brave choice but a smart one! Go see this!

Got Milk? If you don't rush out now to a theatre near you! This was a wonderfully rendered representation of Harvey Milk's influence on the gay movement's development in the 70s. I never knew for how much he was (indirectly) responsible relative to creating awareness and acceptance of homosexuality in the U.S. Run, don't walk, to see this magnificent performance by Sean Penn and cast.

This was a fantastic movie and Sean Penn, once again, was amazing. My 28 year old daughter went with me to see this movie and was so moved by it she cried all the way home. Everyone should see it and Mr. Penn should get the academy award for sure.

I thought the movie seemed very authentic in its depiction of the '70s in the fashion styles and general ambience. Sean Penn embodied Harvey Milk. I kept forgetting it was Sean Penn. He was terrific and truly deserves his Oscar nomination. Can't wait for his next movie!

This was probably Sean Penn's Best performance and Gus Van Sants direction is perfection! A movie of critical importance and very telling of how far this country needs to still go to ensure human rights for everyone.
It was just brilliant and incredibly moving. Harvey Milk was a true leader and hero!

Milk is an amazing film. I have seen it three times and would go see it again. The fight with Proposition 6 is very reminicent of the fight with the current prop 8, only today, we are missing that leader. Hopefully we have it in Obama. It's not a "gay" rights thing, it's a human rights thing and the sooner people understand this, the sooner there will be equality.
Gus Van Sant did an amazing job. Even the vintage clothing was great and very accurate for the time. All of the characters took their roles seriously and the finished product came out perfectly! I recommend this film to every gay and straight person I know.

A suberbly acted and directed film, Milk is simply the best film of the year. With the overly hyped Slumdog..., Milk may be overlooked at Oscar time, and that would be a shame. Movies just don't get any better than this one. It's historically correct and Sean Penn does a brilliant job of portraying the Late gay rights activist, Harvey Milks. The movie was really well done. I wish they'd delved a bit more deeply into what happened after Milk's death, but overall it was excellent. The acting was good and the story was well done, and you got to see actual clips of history.

In an odd way, Milk diminishes the gay rights movement by failing to make the lead characters knowable and compelling. We are left with near-caricatures of men with lispy voices, a prediliction for violent sex, multiple partners, prostitution and no apparent day jobs. Van Sant falls into the cliche by not giving us fully sculpted characters with whom we can identify. It's a risk of the docudrama genre, especially when a film relies on actual footage and flashbacks to tell a story. We get a good biopic, but not a great drama.
