I watched Star Trek as a child. I stood for three hours to get into the first Star Trek movie. I have watched every episode of TNG.....God help me....I have even been to a Star Trek convention or two......and I loved this movie. Familiar enough to bring a sentimental grin and at the same time new and fresh. LOVE the new versions of the original characters. Love the fact that they can go off in a completely different direction from the original series. The original franchise had gotten a bit long in the tooth...and even TNG movies have had their day (never have watched Nemisis....too depressing) but I would enjoy watching this series develop.

Well, I broke down and went to see this movie called Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry, DeForrest Kelly and James Doohan are rolling in their graves. What Gene has created and was most watched from the original series, next generation, deep space nine, and 11 movies was a complete and utter Star Wars clone. From the sound effects, the ships and the action sequences. STAR WARS all the way. George Lucas should hire JJ Abrahms to complete his triology. He already has episode 7 completed aka this movie (Star Trek). No where in the story line did anyone seek out new life and new civilizations. JJ just went forth boldly firing all laser like a tie fighter frenzy. A true Trekkie will past this movie up. Two thumbs down : (

On the downside, I found myself easily able to walk out to get more popcorn with only 15 mins left. That saddened me. We expect something new from Roddenberry. Plot wise, this was not it. Good things: seeing Leonard Nimoy's role is significant and excellent. I hope we see him for many years to come. To my amazement, all the new versions of the original crew are roles well played and interesting. The way the new guys were introduced one-by-one into the script was PERFECTLY done and completely respectful to the original TV show. I was shocked to find myself starting to think the unthinkable -- I might like these folk better than the originals someday. They are that good.

I've been a Trek fan since the late 70s when I used to watch reruns of the original series with my dad as a kid. I can assure you that this is one outstanding movie, and a terrific way to reboot the franchise. And for all those "Trekkers" out there ripping this film, get a life, and for God's sake, move out of your parent's basement already! All these silly comments about feeling betrayed are just pathetic. In case you hadn't noticed, the franchise was all but dead until J.J. Abrams brilliantly brought it back to life. This film will introduce Star Trek to a whole new generation of fans, and I for one am elated over that fact. Go see this movie!!! :)

If you hoped for a coherent narrative of the early days of scrappy Jim Kirk, who would grow up to become the captain of the starship Enterprise, then skip this adolescent-toned “action” movie. Why adolescent? Because its pace is about as frantic and full of special effects as the average sci-fi computer game.
There is little to recommend stories where the pitch comes before the windup. This one starts abruptly with a kind of Romulan “death star” destroying a federation starship, commanded by Kirk’s dad. There’s no clear motive for this violence, even if it sets up the conditions for the birth of baby Kirk in an escape shuttle. Shades of the Krypton disaster, you think? with baby Superman escaping? Well duh!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I grew up with the original series. Being a trekkie at heart had me a little anxious that the new actors would destroy our memories. Boy, was I wrong!! The movie was outstanding! These young actors completely captured the personalities of all of our favorite characters. The storyline was subperb, and the special effects were breathtaking. Kudos to everyone involved with the production of this movie. I want to see it again and can't wait until the next one is released! Oh yes, there will be more!!!

This movie was a feast for my inner child! My brother and I grew up watching the TV show, when the world was still transister! How befitting it was for us to see the movie together! We knew the characters well then, but were awestruck at the seaming of the unknown history. and it was AWESOME to see it thru todays technology! They were all there, and spot on in character developement. Flawless!
If you were to watch the old and the new Star Trek back to back, it wouldn't skip a beat! Well done!

I grew up in a house where my father lived and breathed Star Trek. As I got older I was a big fan of the Next Generation and eventually my wife and I watched all of the other shows and movies.
This movie will please newcomers to Star Trek and old fans alike. The set-up is tweaked from the original Star Trek but the reason is written into the plotline itself - clever work if you ask me.
They do a great job of reintroducing the characters and building them up. This is the key to the movie. After all, any dummy can make an explosion or stage a fight. Making you CARE that the explosion or fight might kill the character is the magic of great science fiction, and here they've pegged it.

I have watched all of the Star Trek series, right from the beginning in the 1960's. I think the movie provided an excellent construction of a foundation for where the main crew characters came from in their personalities and backgrounds.
The movie provided the basis for the relationship between Kirk and Spock, along with a surprise human relationship for Spock which reflects more on the, oft hidden, human half half of his genetic being.
Overall, an excellent production, with a good plot, and plenty of intense action. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, whether versed in the Star Trek traditions, or not.

The movie was good but it was kind of long not a lot of action, it starts of good but get a little long in the middle. If the movie had more action to it maybe a five star for sure, let us hope that the next one will keep it going all the way from start to end.

Good story, a lot of action and fun overall. Definitely worth seeing. Even though I didn't grow up a Trekkie, I recognized many classic lines; the actors did a great job recreating the original roles.

This was worth waiting for. From someone who has been a Trekker since TOS aired on NBC in the Sixties, I have to say that the time travel idea is getting worn thin, but in this case I see why it was necessary. It was bold to destroy Vulcan, and Kirk should have been thrown in the brig. But then, who would have saved the Earth? Star Fleet is nothing like the U S Navy. It does help to have friends in high places. Good action, Love the new version of the "old" Enterprise. Glad to be rid of Brannon Braga!

I am a die hard fan and this was a great start to a new installment of a great franchise. Fast paced action with a lot of humor made the film one of the best of the ST movies.
One item that did bug me is why Pike is the only "adult" on the ship. This isn't a training ship. There should be at least a couple of people with more then a days experience to put in charge but it makes the story work.

The latest version of ‘Star Trek’ could not be better! It pays homage to the original by capturing its essence, spirit, and character, but improves on it by adding today’s awesome computer generated imagery and special effects. It’s hard for me to judge the movie on its own merits, because it did such a great job of bringing back memories of the original TV series. I would say that it’s a movie that everyone should see, but if you grew up watching the original, it is a must see!

An enjoyable piece of fluff for the faithful. Spock says "Fascinating" (about a chair); McCoy says, "D**n it Jim I'm a doctor not a physicist!"; Scotty says, "Captain, A'm doin' the best A can!"
Actors all look enough like originals, except Uhura, Sulu, and Checkov. Checkov played by an actual Russian, but overdoes the "Wery wisible" nonsense None of the acting really bad; Pine does an amusing Shatner Simon Pegg hilarious as usual.
Plot almost unimportant in this "alternative origins" set-up for the sequels. Script bad as every other ST script, though mercifully free from some of the Roddenberry goodness and light.
Effects all pretty good. Design right out of 1968. Closing titles annoying.
Wait for the DVD.

Anthony Lane eat your heart out. One can be a movie buff, literate, and discriminating and still really enjoy Star Trek.
It has action, adventure, some semblance of a story, lots of nice special effects (I love the Romulan starship), and a Brad Pitt look-alike for a hero.
Parts of the story don't quite hang together with the time travel stuff (a la Lost), but I think J. J. Abrams will help us out in the sequels.
Meanwhile, it's just fun!

The actors' attempts to capture the essence of the original characters proved far better than I'd expected.
The primary storyline was most excellent, but at least one side story went where no man has, or should have, gone before.
All in all, one of the best movies I've seen this decade.

This movie was very well done. The actors did a tremendous job, and the visual effects were amazing. Also it was really interesting to see how the characters "came together" to form the group they became on the series. They even had some of the mannerisms of the original actors, which made it really interesting to watch

I enjoyed this movie. It gave you how the crew meet and at the same time opened the series up to all new adventures. The actors they got to play the characters do a great job of being how we older fans rember them. It also added a twist to things that will let the writers go in new directions, they did a great job on this movie, I hope the quality of writting contiunes .

Not being a true die hard trekker, but still a great fan of the series. It starts in the pre acadamy days and ends where the TV series starts. It was great hearing phrases and sounds from the TV series in this movie which gave it an authenticity feeling. The writers and the director did a fantastic job breathing life into "the beginning" that the late Gene Roddenbury would be proud.

This movie was what I used to go to the theater for: action, adventure, and comedy, without "adult language, nudity" and stupidity. I enjoyed reminiscing with my fellow movie goers over the original series, and how this movie answered some timeless questions. The youngsters won't get some of it, and they will still enjoy it.
