I have watched all of the Star Trek series, right from the beginning in the 1960's. I think the movie provided an excellent construction of a foundation for where the main crew characters came from in their personalities and backgrounds.
The movie provided the basis for the relationship between Kirk and Spock, along with a surprise human relationship for Spock which reflects more on the, oft hidden, human half half of his genetic being.
Overall, an excellent production, with a good plot, and plenty of intense action. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, whether versed in the Star Trek traditions, or not.
