I grew up in a house where my father lived and breathed Star Trek. As I got older I was a big fan of the Next Generation and eventually my wife and I watched all of the other shows and movies.
This movie will please newcomers to Star Trek and old fans alike. The set-up is tweaked from the original Star Trek but the reason is written into the plotline itself - clever work if you ask me.
They do a great job of reintroducing the characters and building them up. This is the key to the movie. After all, any dummy can make an explosion or stage a fight. Making you CARE that the explosion or fight might kill the character is the magic of great science fiction, and here they've pegged it.
First and foremost this is not any age of children. I would feel weird bringing a 16 year old to it - rape, shooting pregnant women, indescriminate violence against civilians... And these are the good guys!
This is not for the Spiderman fans - the whole feel of the movie is completely different. This is not a typical comic book movie; it is based on a graphic novel that is complex, gritty, violent, and requires you as a viewer to keep up or be lost in the subtleties.
The actors were PERFECT for the film. Relative nobodies the lot of them, each one struck me as terribly average looking which was refreshing for a film like this. The casting was downright superb and really pulled the film from average up to good in my perspective.
