If you hoped for a coherent narrative of the early days of scrappy Jim Kirk, who would grow up to become the captain of the starship Enterprise, then skip this adolescent-toned “action” movie. Why adolescent? Because its pace is about as frantic and full of special effects as the average sci-fi computer game. There is little to recommend stories where the pitch comes before the windup. This one starts abruptly with a kind of Romulan “death star” destroying a federation starship, commanded by Kirk’s dad. There’s no clear motive for this violence, even if it sets up the conditions for the birth of baby Kirk in an escape shuttle. Shades of the Krypton disaster, you think? with baby Superman escaping? Well duh!
