I found the performance excellent. Netrebko's Antonia was out of this world although she had said in interviews an stage actor who cries while performing is doing the best, it is imposible to sing while crying and hence singers have to stay on control of their emotions. How wonderful to see he she her contradict herself.
Only two flaws: the erotic(?) aerobics performed during the barcarola, song that is a description of the movement of the gondolas in the water, and that in the Legacy place in Dedham where I saw the movie, there is a bowling alley next door and the rumbling came through several times, very bothersome. All of the cast, extraordinary. Should the MET make a DVD with this performance, I would buy it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Bravo! Bravo! What a wonderful opera by all of the cast members.
I was impressed with the aria by Olympia in the first act. Her song kept you on the edge of your seat and made you want to be a soprano!
By far the best character of the entire opera was Spalanzani from act 1, played by the super talented tenor Mark Schowalter. His voice was harmonious and smooth as he played the strong and sneaky doll maker. He played the character with zeal and pasison seen by few other actors/singers. Mark Schowalter is truly a person to watch in the opera world and a tremendous gift to his craft.

This was my first opera and I was quite impressed with the theater experience. The broadcast was expertly done, with beautiful camera work, direction, picture and sound. The behind-the-scenes segments during the intermission were quite informative, especially for a novice such as myself. The only beef I would have is that the AMC theater in Arcadia, CA seemed to have the black level set too high because the picture was a bit milky with no true blacks at all. But I'm sure few people even noticed that.

How can a production of "Hoffmann" filtered through the lenses of Kafka and Fellini's "8 1/2" not be good? The performance was simply outstanding, particularly that of Kate Lindsey and Joseph Calleja (following in the steps of none other than Luciano Pavarotti, the last tenor to play Hoffmann at the Met). Alan Held, too, deserves a "Bravo!"
The only drawback to the performance was the rather dark stage lightning, though it's possible that was done on purpose. Everything else more than made up for that shortcoming. Catch the encore on January 6 if you missed the live show yesterday!

Live screening was better than seeing it live. Fantastic cast, how did the Met get so many great performers in one production?!!Joseph Calleja surely going to be as good as they come. Anna Netrebko is beautiful, sings like an angel. And what can I say about Kathleen Kim, unbelievable voice and acting. Alan Held , the best! Superb camera work, close-ups, angles. Can hardly wait for "Der Rosenkavalier"!

Tales of Hoffman is my favorite opera. This production was the best of the series and the best Hoffman I have ever seen. I saw things
in this production that I had not noticed before.
The direction, the camera work, and the artists on stage and off all combined to create a moving and thoughtful and provocative Hoffman. Opera at its best.

I thought that I'd seen most of the best operas more than once - I was mistaken - this was superb..great score, beautifully performed with subtle direction from James Levine..fascinating staging by B. Sher, an amazing performances by the new tenor, as well as Anna Netrebko (I'm so glad that she's performing so much at the Met), Alan Held and the rest of the great cast.
Thanks, Peter Gelb

Fantastic production, great singing made this a very enjoyable experience for the three of us.
I'd never seen "The Tales of Hoffman" before or even read a synopsis so I read up on it before we went to the theater and I was blown away by the opera. It's a strange opera plot to be sure but since it takes place in Hoffman's mind anything goes, and to stunning effect. Offenbach's music is more powerful than I imagined and the opening of the third act is incredibly sexy. Four hours just flew by!

What a wonderful experience! You understand why the Met is among the very best opera houses in the world. The performers, tenors, and divas were amazing. The story was entertaining, with beautiful lighting and decors. The orchestra and the music were sumptuous. The Met was full, and the screening sold out. The camera work accompanying the perfect picture and sound was excellent and put us right into the action; I really enjoyed watching the close-up performance of the singers and I believe it’s the next best thing to actually attending the performance in New York. In addition, we were treated to exclusive live interviews of the performers backstage in between acts! I had never seen anything like this before. Opera is really fun!

Not my favorite opera, but just about as perfect a performance as we're ever going to see on the HD series.
The voices were incredible. Everyone was magnificent and I’m positive that Calleja is on his way to becoming a word renowned tenor. Also, the staging and costumes were a beautiful fit to the mood of the opera.
The camera angles and views were exceptional, and, fortunately, no interference with transmission in spite of the blizzard that was heading for New York.
Kudos to the Met for this one.

The opera itself is one of the best, very dark, almost macabre. Offenbach's music is always entertaining. The Met's production is superb and brings all of that out. The camera work favors closeups too much, cheating us of views of the vast Met stage, and more crucially, shots of characters interacting with each other within the frame. The presentation in my local theater was visually perfect but the sound was too loud. The theater manager turned it down after Act I after I complained, but my ears hurt the rest of the afternoon.

Outstanding production and performances of one of my favorite operas. It's wonderful to think that it will be avaiable for viewing in the future. The cinematography gets better with each Met HD production. One small criticism -- the closeups are great, but there should be more wide angle shots to give a view of the production as a whole.

one of the absolutely best new productions we've seen. Calleja was supurb, and all other singers were terrific too. love the Voigt intermission features, too! We're hooked on HD opera but we also go to the Met a couple of times a year, you do get a different perspective!

All the cast was great. I enjoyed Kim the most. I hope Calleja doesn't ruin his voice doing such a heavy role so soon. The staging was excellent. Much relief after La Sonnambula disaster last season. The only thing I have a problem with is, the camera work. It's always much to close, almost all the time. I would like to see at times all the stage and get an idea of the whole picture. I didn't get to see the last act because of the snow storm we had on Long Island.

Les Contes d'Hoffman was exceptional in every way. With James Levine back in the pit, his abilities as maestro shone in the pitch-perfect performances. Bartlett Sher's production is seedy and sumptuous. The talent was incomparable, from the lead to the chorus. A standout was Kate Lindsay as Muse/Nicklauss -- a terrific actress and stunning mezzo. Anna Netrebko is a fine singer and lovely as Antonia. This production offered balance between closeup and longshot, so one saw the subtleties of the singers' fine acting as well as the overall drama of the full stage. Bravo!
