They just seem to keep getting better and better.Yesterday's Don Carlo had me on the edge of my seat throughout the show. What a splendid performance! The theatre was sold out, again. I didn't think they could top the Don Pasquale but they did. Thank you Metropolitan Opera.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Another magical Met afternoon.

The Met did it again. It seems to get better with each HD transmission. Don Pasquale was a total delight to both the eyes and the ears. The sets and the costumes were the best I've seen this year. Netrebko - WOW!. Del Carlo - Perfect. Kwiecien - Spectacular. Polenzani - Unmatched lyric beauty. Talk about a dream cast.....THIS WAS IT. I'm planning on going to the encore presentation! Thank you MET for another wonderful production!
Productions like this AIDA are why it is called GRAND Opera. Yes, these sets have been around the block a few times but, boy, do they still work! (A shame the Met didn't use their beautiful Zefferelli sets for the last HD Opera - Tosca.) Urmana (Aida), Bohta (Rhadames), and especially Zajick (Amneris) were about the best you'll ever hear in these roles. The Met Orchestra, under Gatti and the superb Met Chorus have never sounded better.
Can't wait for the next HD presentation. Thank you Metropolitan Opera and a personal thank you to Peter Gelb.
Aside from the dreadful production, there was absolutely no complaint with the singing, acting, and orchestra. What a great performance from all involved. Alvarez sang with such passion. Mattila, as usual, brought a new level of artistry to her interpretation of this role. George Gagnidze, as Scarpia, absolutely oozed evil. I think his was the best Scarpia I've ever seen and/or heard, and I've heard a lot of them.
Yes, go see it if you can. Open your ears but close your eyes. Bondi deserved the resounding boos he got on opening night. As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Zefferelli production IS a tough act to follow.
Bondi, along with Mary Zimmerman, should be shown the exit door of the Met post haste.
Peter Gelb has become THE hero for me. His decision to present HD Metropolitan Opera performances is, perhaps, the most innovative action opera has seen in the last 100 years. My wife and I have attended five of the transmissions and plan to attend 10 next year. Fille was a pure delight. At last, we have a cast that can breathe some life into an otherwise dull opera. Dessay and Florez....what a perfectly matched pair! Again, bravi tutti.
