Tales of Hoffman is my favorite opera. This production was the best of the series and the best Hoffman I have ever seen. I saw things in this production that I had not noticed before. The direction, the camera work, and the artists on stage and off all combined to create a moving and thoughtful and provocative Hoffman. Opera at its best.
I thought the performance was fine. I didn't feel the passion between characters, and the intensity of the HD close up did not do the performers any favors. My real problem -- for the very first time -- was the camera work. It was sloppy and unprofessional. The overhead shots were a distraction and added nothing. There were several actual mishaps with camera nowwhere near the action was. This included one of the famous set effects. The live audience was applauding but we couldn't see why. After all of that complaining I need to say that I absolutely love the HD program even with nutty camera work.
