The opera itself is one of the best, very dark, almost macabre. Offenbach's music is always entertaining. The Met's production is superb and brings all of that out. The camera work favors closeups too much, cheating us of views of the vast Met stage, and more crucially, shots of characters interacting with each other within the frame. The presentation in my local theater was visually perfect but the sound was too loud. The theater manager turned it down after Act I after I complained, but my ears hurt the rest of the afternoon.
