I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was good to finally see a movie made about significant gay rights history. And I thought they did a great job of it. The actor's character research was spectacular. I thought the story telling was a great tribute to history and to Harvey Milk. Thank you Gus Van Sant for finally giving the gay community a worthwhile voice in Hollywood.

I'm always reluctant to award 5 stars, but I'd say this deserves 4+ - Sean Penn's performance is Oscar-worthy, and he is supported by a very strong cast (especially Josh Brolin). The fusion of historic footage with the dramatic sequences works very effectively. Most of all, it depicts a very critical, and undervalued, chapter in the history of American civil liberties, and the recognition of a need for equal protection to "lifestyle" minorities.
I brought my 14-year-old (straight) son, and he enjoyed the movie; I would not recommend it for younger audiences.

The first thing I tell my friends is that this movie is very un-Gus Van Sant. The telltale 'old-looking' film and some of his visual predilections are basically the only remnants of his very specific cult style. Despite that, though, the film is incredible. The character research, the subtle nuances in the portrayals of Milk and White betray the kind of brilliant directing that only Gus Van Sant can command. In addition to just being a great film, 'Milk' really paints the picture of the contemporary issue of human rights from the gay point of view in a way that has, until now, remained unsatisfactorily voiced. A must-see for anyone who knows at least one gay person.

I expected a good film, but I was blown away at the amazing acting. I am not a big Sean Penn fan - I still think of him as Spicoli in "Fast Times." He was stunning in this film. The love scene between the Milk and Scott was electric. Very well done! Penn is definitely up for an Oscar!

I was drawn to 'Milk" by user reviews from people who evidently watched it through rose colored glasses. Sean Penn and the rest of the cast did a great job of acting, but if the portrayals were accurate, Harvey Milk didn't fight FOR people, he used them, which led to his demise. He fomented hate (in his words) against the police, Anita Bryant, and others that didn't agree with his agenda. While fighting intolerance, he became intolerant. Also, it should be emphasized that there is same gender kissing, cruising, and erotic male nudity for the apparent enjoyment of homosexuals, but can be very uncomfortable for others, which calls attention to the insensitivity of the militant gay movement. I would recommend this movie to my gay friends only.

If this movie had been released in October, before the elections in November, we wouldn't be burdened with the repercussions of PROP 8 in California now. This movie, so eloquently and succinctly puts a "face" on the gay community, as Harvey Milk was able to do, that it would have failed by a landslide! SEAN PENN is brilliant! Gus Van Sant's usage of vintage footage and photos mixed in with new production was brilliant and gave a genuine authenticity to the entire production. It had me wiping tears over and over throughout the movie.

This is a fine biopic about the San Francisco gay politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man elected to non-trivial office. The movie follows Milk from his relocation into San Francisco, with its tolerance of gays, up through the violent end of Milk's life. Milk was not perfect, and I have the impression director Gus Van Sant didn't show how hard-edged a politician Milk could be. But his was a remarkable life, and most viewers will be inspired by the man's determination and spirit.

Could've understood the jest of the movie without being so blatant about their homosexuality. Enjoyed the political drama and the hope that Mr. Milk tried to convey. Several scenes were very uncomfortable to watch so I wouldn't recommend this movie...it's overrated even though the story is unique and true.

Starring Sean Penn(Mystic River, Sweet and Low down) James Franco(Spiderman trilogy, Flyboys) and Josh Brolin( No country for old men, W) This oscar worthy film about Harvey MIlk ,the first openly gay city suprevisor in Calofornia history simpily reminds us why we use to go see a movie. It is an inspiring and at times funny true story about what we can acomplish when we fight for it. I highly recomend seeing it but beware of the "R" rating.

If Sean Penn isn't one of the top 2 or 3 actors of our time; I would like to know who they are. He is fabulous in this true-life story. I had never heard of Harvey Milk, what a life. If you are even the least bit uncomfortable with gay subject matter....STAY HOME! I'm not sure it deserves all the Oscar hype that's been associated with the movie but it was a great story; and as I said, Sean Penn is wonderful!

The movie was a good insight into the Gay Civil Rights Movement, however I felt like I was peering into the movie and not connected to the actors. There was too much build up to Milk's assassination and not enough of what led to it and what followed it. It felt a little disjointed. It was pleasant to watch, especially since it was a subject not typically seen in major motion pictures.
