I really enjoyed this movie, probably because the performances are so good, especially by the lead. Also fine work from Lisa Kudrow and Thomas Haden Church. But Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as the parents are the best. See this movie; it is definitely worth your time.
This movie isn't as powerful or as memorable as Reiner's Stand By Me (though I wish it were), but it is excellent. The kid portrayals and the back-and-forth flashback sequences that build this movie are wonderfully crafted. Probably Reiner's best work since creating Stand By Me.
The cast is superlative. Emile Hirsch, James Franco (whom I've never truly liked before), Josh Brolin, all the others -- a truly exceptional group. Brolin channels Dan White so well it's almost frightening -- they even look alike. And the story is both compelling and very, very well told.
Too long by at least a third (my mind kept wandering), this movie definitely is not Luhrmann's best effort. Though Jackman is as good as I've ever seen him, Kidman comes across like the uncertain newbie who made the outrageously offensive Dead Calm.
One interesting, though not positive, note: there really are two movies here. One ends about an hour into it; then the second begins.
This is the dumbest, most violent movie I have seen in some time. And if they excised the word "f**k", it would be 45 minutes shorter -- a double boon for all.
Doesn't make W look as stupid as I thought it would. Really brings out the whacked-out relationship between son and father (kinda reminds me of my own father, unfortunately).
