If you love musicals and Fellini, you'll enjoy this movie. Daniel Day Lewis does a great job with a Roman Italian accent, he is more Fellini than Marcello Mastroianni, Penelope Cruz is sexy and funny, Fergie gives a powerful performance, and Kate Hudson does one of the most entertaining dance numbers seen on screen. This movie is not a serious film, it's pure entertainment. We've seen it twice already.

My friend and I were going to leave twice; but kept hoping the plot would reveal itself. It did not. Too many songs, too little dialogue and the songs did nothing to carry the flimsy story forward. DISAPPOINTING!

I was worried I wouldn't like this film given some of the reviews. Boy were they off the mark! Both my husband and I thought this movie was excellent. Daniel Day-Lewis was surprisingly perfect in the role of Guido. Marion Cotillard was wonderful. In fact, all played their roles as if made for them. The interplay of the black and white scenes was reminiscent of Fellini's 8 1/2 and added that "fellini feeling". As I was recommending this film to others I found that those who had already seen it loved it. My husband and I are planning to see NINE again.

Although the choreography, costumes and actors were great, the story was slow and did not really give resolution. I left with a lot of questions -- how much was true? Did he reconcile with his wife? Was a movie made? Nice work but boring enough that the woman sitting next to my daugher (about 60 yrs old) was snoring.

Since Chicago was a few years ago, and my memory fades, I am not in a position to compare Nine to that film. But judging it on its own, Nine is a Ten. The performances are absolutely outstanding, starting with Daniel Day Lewis as the conflicted brilliant movie director. The women, from Judi Dench to Kate Hudson to Penelope Cruz, are all outstanding singers, dancers and actresses. Rob Marshall has done it again.

I had the highest of hopes for this movie. I love a good musical when done right. This movie, while having some decent musical numbers fell flat with the storyline. I was bored with the dialogue. Daniel Day Lewis had no other emotion to play but pathetic. I had no idea what Fergie was doing and she didn't speak anyways. She didn't affect the main character and or any one else around her. Kate Hudson and Judy Dentsch (spelling) were the only bright spots. My advice: If you are curious still about it....RENT IT later for a few dollars.

Only a few problems with Nine...
1) If you're expecting Chicago, you will be disappointed. Nine in any form (stage, film) isn't as good as Chicago. It's just an inferior work.
2) There probably isn't one showstopper like the Cell Block Tango, but it still provides some very exciting musical numbers (the top four being A Call from the Vatican, Be Italian, Cinema Italiano and Take It All).
3) Kate Hudson's character seems a bit extraneous, but she does get to sing Cinema Italiano, which is catchy. Otherwise she could have been cut and more time given to Marion Cotillard who steals the show.
Overall, it was very good. 4/5 or 8/10. Good movie, not EXCELLENT like Chicago.

BORING, yet OVERDONE a wase of incredible talent. I went to see it because I love Chicago. Also I was influenced by TV interviews w/the cast & director, apparently a desperate measure to get an audience. Daniel D. L. was totally miscast: running his fingers through greased-up hair, smoking & staring at his feet & that was that. The plot line is beyond THIN: famous director has writer's block & juggles numerous relationships w/women..... Redeeming points are Judy Dench & Marion C. Great performances but short.

This one will fall into your "just okay" category - only a couple of show-stopping numbers, but those were great. Day-Lewis remains a wonderful actor, but not a song-and-dance man ... and I struggled with his attempt. Kate Hudson was suprisingly good, but it's Marion Cotillard who steals the scenes - she is luminescent, even through her painful relationship with Day-Lewis' character.
I found myself watch-checking several times as the film dragged in parts, and I counted 4 patrons who left early and never returned. Lots of hype, but it fails to leave you WOWED.

Attention Hollywood: not all star-studded musicals will be great! "Nine" is painful to sit through and Daniel Day-Lewis is grossly miscast. The scenery in this movie was beautiful. The acting is exceptional. The dance numbers are fun to watch. I think Kate Hudson probably had the most fun of all the actresses. I would see this movie again.

i love fellini firstly and i enjoyed this movie, but from my perspective it is just loosely based on the maestro or 8.5. perhaps they should have stuck a bit to his creativity, instead of the demeaning and sad consequences of his affairs. the dance bits were fantastic, hollywood at its best and staging with cages, etc was similar to chicago. the ladies were superb and looked so very beautiful, overall this film was entertaining in the scenery and performance but the story was a bit grim. daniel day lewis is a superb actor but i feel he was on one track with no movement outside of one attitude. while the smoking is essential, it was excessive.

Wow--this was a major disappointment. It was simply a hodgepodge of musical numbers with very little story line. You had NO engagement with the characters whatsoever.I love Daniel Day Lewis and he portrays quite a haunted soul here-- he is the ultimate actor--and can sing--but you never really care about Guido...and get ready to hear the name Guido bantered about! GUIDO...GUIDO,GUIDO...other lovely ladies come in and depart--one song each--never really part of the plot! the movie drags on and on and on. kept waiting for something to happen, but it never really got going. there were some good performances - Daniel Day Lewis was good and Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz were certainly compelling in their roles but the movie just lacks something. My friend's snoring kept me from falling asleep during this movie. Which I think I did in one part.
We contemplated leaving during the film a couple of times.

I loved it!.,,it was such an enjoyable story about one talented man's life...fun & touching to watch...I think you will either love t or or not...its that sort of modern movie musical...overall most will come out smiling unless they are normally crtically of everthing...always bitter people in life who simply can't say nice things...lol...but do go & judge for yourself...will be a delghtful time with some beautiful Italian backdrops!

NINE was entertaining, but fell just short of what I had hoped for.
Fergie and Kate Hudson both gave fabulous performances and broke from character, (although Kate was seriously channelling her Mom's go go personality from Laugh In).
Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren are two of the most stunning women on the planet.
Marion Cotillard is the successor to Audrey Hepburn/Leslie Caron.
Day Lewis as usual became his character, He does have the chain smoking "lean & hungry" look we have come to associate with Fellini, DeSica etc.
The film dragged at times, thank god for "Cinema Italiano", or I might still be sleeping in the theatre.

This is one of my favorite musicals. And Rob Marshall missed the boat. And I'm really disappointed. Part of the reason is the same reason that RENT failed as a movie. It is SO disjointed to switch from film realism to big splashy musical numbers! Stick to ONE convention! One of the few moments that actually worked great was when Marion Cotillard sang My Husband Makes Movies. The only singer in the whole bunch is Fergie....who does deliver with Be Italian......this was the best musical number too.....but then Marshall takes the whole burlesque thing way too far . Antonio Bandaras was great in the Broadway version. AND, he not only could sing The Bells of St. Sebastian (a vocally difficult song, AND a BIG piece of the plot threat. ),

Inasmuch as I loved Rob Marshall's Chicago - this was a far reach with second-rate dancing - I couldnt quite follow the story from beginning to end maybe because there was NO STORY? It was weak, boring and overproduced with chaotic scenes of nothingness. A huge disappointment - sorry Rob - had higher hopes for you!

Having seen the Original Broadway cast perform Nine in 1982, I wasn't sure I would enjoy the movie, but, I was really impressed. I knew that all of the actors could act, but I had no clue they could sing and dance as well. This was a great job of bringing to the screen an incredible Tony winning musical... based on a phenominal Fellini film. I loved it enough that I'm thinking of seeing it again..

.As a lover of movie musicals, this one misses and Rob Marshall loses credibility by stealing not from Fellini but from himself.
First as many have pointed out- you don't care about anyone.in the film
Secondly where Fellini is know for striking visuals, these visuals and art direction are mundane.
The choreography is 4th rate Fosse and we've seen it before and better.
Marshall tries to foist his Chicago concept on this and it simply doesn't work.
Makes me think that Marshall may indeed be a one trick (Chicago) pony.
Avoid at all costs. It was the worst 9 hours I've spent watching a movie. Really? It was just 1 hour and 50?

I enjoyed the move but.........The musical performances were terrific.........Daniel Day Lewis and Penelope Cruz gave great acting performances. I have to admit I was disappointed after all the hype.
