WOW - never has Hollywood responded so favorably to one terrible script! SO much potential here and it's completely lost on Clooney's 1/2 wit performance. The material was amazing, but the lackluster performances and lack of believability just ruined it for me. The eldest daughter, played by Shailene Woodley, is by far the best performance in the film, but the rest just falls flat. Seriously flat. Clooney's done much better work in the past.
Contraband is just the kind of movie I've come to expect from Mark Wahlberg -- and he knocks it out-of-the-park again. The seedier side of life is brought to the screen in this gripping, fast-past tale of the man who wants out .... but can never escape. Ribisi is a master once again (and downright creepy!) in this film, and the rest of the supporting cast turn in top-notch performances for a wild, smuggling ride. Enjoy!
Thomas Horn is a star -- witness his miraculous performance as the son of one of the fallen on 9-11, who's challenged by that event, as well as numerous personal affectations and curiosities. Intelligent far beyond his years this young person is no youngster and missing the emotional equation that is the BEST part of life. As he searches for an object left behind by his deceased father, he discovers himself, and his family -- as he's never seen them before. This movie is high impact, but I also found some sequences erratic -- and still wondering just where they really fit in the film. The director's arms-length description of '9-11' left me empty, as that day was so FULL of emotion. The film does depict, however, the senselessness of that day.
You'll leave hopeful for humanity, but along the way we're making some big mistakes. I appreciate the message the movie sends, but the computer generation of the apes was distracting. Still, we empathize with these oh-so-human creatures and what our quest for science does to them. What we do to them. Until they (the apes) realize they can fight back. I enjoyed James Franco in the film but, must comment, that Freida Pinto's role as his girlfriend was underwritten and completely forgettable.
THAT was a movie! I had marginal expectations going in - but this film blew me away. Warning: it's shockingly violent ... but that's the point. The lead is a working class kid who falls for the wrong girl. He takes risks to help her and her family and gets involved in a scheme that's way out of his league. He does what he has to do. Great writing here - lots of twists that will keep you jumping. It's a crescendo and an incredible ride! Ryan Gosling is mesmerizing.
My high hopes were dashed with a very slow start and a positively lethargic finish. I found the "family portrait" not believable. The poorly developed characters led to an incohesive story ... which I found disjointed. I wasn't freigtened. I wasn't interested. I could barely sit through the entire film.
Fantastic casting and expertly acted. This is a gripping political thriller- which leaves you bluntly assaulted by its realism. It makes me 'shudder to think' - although it makes me think. It's a game of wits and strategy until a soul is lost -- and much more. Even the believers question what it IS they believe in. The tragedies unfold on many levels in the complex plot - but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Masterful.
Cowboys and Aliens attempts to combine every heroic moment from multiple film genres and misses the mark, for the most part. There are several glaring holes in the film - the main one being that the towns folk don't seem to be a bit suprised that aliens invade their 2-horse town! The tone then set, the movie takes the obvious course that we (humans) must fight for our very existence. Mix 'will-to-live' with a few good fights and CGI effects and you've made a movie. Just not a good one.
This movie was a nice surprise - a love story different than I've seen in quite a while ... and with characters that were funny and real and might be like some folks you know! It's a trajic tale of a mid-life couple who hit the skids -- and the twists and turns that will keep you laughing and crynig. Nice ending to the movie too.
The characters in this film are fully developed, insightful and interesting. The story unfolds in a true manner and makes an honest attempt to portray the mood of the country at the time ... when the simple times weren't always so simple, pretty or fair. Casting and performances were poignant and funny. The Help is a gritty and eye-opening look at the people who serve the affluent, and gave more of themselves than many of those families deserved. Faced with trials and tribulations, the Help held their heads high. A lesson for the ages.
