The Start Trek brand name remains, but that is about the only trace of the original series. There were more fist-fights and general violence in these two hours than in the entire TV run, most of it gratuitous. Captain Kirk came across as an arrogant twit, not a skillful commander. Worst of all, the messages of one universe, quest for peace, and general sense of awe in the original series are totally absent, replaced by mindless special effects and conflict.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I am not a Trekkie but... I am a HUGE Sci-fi nut. With that said, I thought the movie stayed faithful to its origins while giving it a hipper twist. The cast was great! Karl Urban hit the nail right in the head for Bones. Koe saldana gave Uhura a fresh look while opening up to allow us to see a little of her world. However the jury is still out on the love relationship between Uhura and Spock.Not sure how I feel about that. Loved Scottie and Spock and of course Pines' redention of Kirk gave more meat to why Shatner's character of Kirk was portrayed the way it was in the 1960's. Action packed, good laughs and full of nods to the past! I'm waiting for the next one!

I've never been a Trek fan until yesterday. I took my 88 year old pop to the movie as he has been a fan since the original TV show(and I have teased him about it for 20 years).
I was not expecting much, especially since seeing Wolverine (I am a huge fan) and being completely dissapointed and bored to tears.
Star Trek was absolutely amazing and the casting was superb. Unbelieveable non-stop action (Wolverine had a snooze-fest surrounded by action). You learned the back story on Kirk and Spock w/out being bored and it made you really understand their characters.
Simply kick-azz.

What a brilliant film - I loved it.
I am a huge Star Trek fan and it more than satisfied me. Was an exciting, unpredicable and very well directed film.
The actors did an amazing job of being the young Enterprise crew, the writing and production was impressive too.
The action was awesome and the majesty of space and daring situations were fantastic and convincing.
I was disappointed with only one line in the whole thing...
Scotty is a Scott, his line is 'Aye Aye Cap'ain' NOT

this 2 hr and 6 minute movie goes by so quickly that you cant believe it. Lots of action. Casting was excellent. I recommend not watching any previews before watching this movie. Previews give away allot of great shots that should be savored while watching the actual movie.

The special effects are great-even better if you watch it on a IMAX screen. This movie definitely brought the franchise back to life with new young fresh actors and a bit of alternate reality plot. I'll buy on Blu-Ray DVD when it comes out.

I have never seen a Star Trek movie or tv show and I loved this movie! It was fast paced without resorting to a bunch of pointless explosions. My friend who loves star trek got a real kick out of it, and because it was a prequel, I had no trouble understanding the plot.

While the plot is somewhat dark and convoluted, the characters themselves are what keeps your attention while your mind wanders to speculation of what follows? Whether it's a new TV series or straight to the big screen, you'll be eager for more. A wonderful film.

At to be expected, j.j. abrams has made a very good movie. This movie can be enjoyed by anyone, even if they are not a star trek fan. The story line has successfully reinvigorated the franchise allowing for much more story line with the existing characters. I foresee a bright future for the Star Trek franchise.

I was hoping for the movie promised with new actors and ideas to revamp the ST movies. Movie has lots of action and an average story. All the content that makes Star Trek great was gone. The science was laughable. Canon is gone even for items not covered by the time line change. Orci either doesn't know Trek or is incompetent to write it. The content and continuity was weak. Lots of inserted Trek hype was not enough to make a good movie.

Used to be loyal to original program, so we loved this fine prequel to the cast that we were so fond of. The actors captured the spirit, voice, and gestures of their characters very well. The action was fine, good detail and not overdone. One quibble was the overuse of Leonard Nimoy at the end, a little drippy.
Saw it at the Ziegfeld, huge, Trekkie audience which made it that much more enjoyable.

Saw this movie at the AMC Arizona Center in Phoenix for a Saturday matinee this past weekend - Totally Awesome!!!! I knew Spock had charisma - he should have had more kissing scenes! This movie helps those who have not seen all the other Star Trek movies and TV episodes kind of bring it all together. Would definitely see this again, and at the end I was wishing it would go another couple of hours!

The depth of the story and assembly of the crew of the Enterprise make this a must-see movie for the casual and hard-core Star Trek fan. Layer on top the eye-candy special effects and you have the best Star Trek movie ever made as well as a fantastic experience that cuts across all ages and interests. I saw Trek tonight. I enjoyed the film overall, and everything worked for me I can think of. except 3 Trek details, a few plot points that could have easily been changed and those annoying flares JJ employs throughout the film and lack of wide shots to give us a sense of space. I also didn't like the open/close titles to look like a comic book movie.
It's not wrath of Khan good, as the technical aspects of Khan never distracted from the story or acting like they do here. The villain in this film is underdeveloped and requires a back-story not seen in the film.

It was action-packed and gave a plausible explanation how all these characters managed to come together. I was unaware of some of the people playing cameo roles in the movie which was a nice surprise. The dialogue was fantastic and the insertion of classic one liners made it even better. There is definite BFF chemistry between Kirk and Spock and I truly hope that there is a sequel. KUDOS J.J.Abrams, not that i'm surprised. Would recommend this to trekkies and non-trekkies alike.

In the classic episode "City On The Edge Of Forever" the Federation ceased to exist because McCoy traveled back in time and saved pacifist Edith Keeler changing history. Similarly, Star Trek as we have grown to know and love (call it Star Trek Prime) has been altered in this new movie due to another time travel scenario. Much of what may or may not transpire since "Enterprise" which pre-dates the events in this movie, or possibly the events since "First Contact" (time paradox issues are really hard to resolve here) suggest that much of what happened in the original series, and sequels, may never have happened. Or maybe they did. This was a smart way of re-booting Star Trek, or to put it more bluntly, this ain't your daddy's Star Trek!

Dazzling effects and some excellent casting for McCoy and Uhuru especially. The Kirk and Spock characters were suitably underdeveloped as they should be in a prequel.. Chekhov and Scott were just fun. But the overall presentation struck me as "Star Trek for Dummies," which is to say, much more like the Star Wars franchise. As a stand-alone movie, it was very enjoyable. As part of the Star Trek canon, it was not there. You will notice that even the familiar theme was not used until the closing credits.

I have only watched a handful of Star Trek episodes on TV, but found myself enjoying this movie a lot more than I thought I would. There was a lot of "punch 'em up" scenes in it, though, which seemed to have distressed my non-violent son a bit who's 12. Overall it was well done - lots of cool graphics. Would be good to see at an Imax I would suspect.

The plot details were wonderful and consistent from the characterization point of view. The story unfolds nicely and motivates the action sequences. There is a significant amount of well placed humor which fits in nicely with the movie. Highly recommended!
