While the overall performance was incredible and moving, numerous sound track and picture blackoouts marred the effect. Thge technical glitches have to be overcome or audiences will revolt.

I loved this production, but the transmission glitches at the AMC Owings Mills are unacceptable. I have attended almost all of the H/D Simulcasts. I can't remember much trouble at the Regal in Bel Air and those who were there for Aida had no problem while those at AMC had to go home after the first act.

Turandot Live in HD was, as expected, a spectacular, moving experience. The occasional sound glitches were minor, and did not detract from a wonderful performance. I am a strong proponent of the Met Live in HD broadcasts, both for the unique ability to be up close with the singers, and for the marvelous interviews and the backstage shots during the intermissions. I hope and believe these broadcasts will attract a younger audience to the joys of opera music and the human voice, made so readily accessible and understandable for all.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The technical problems with sound burbs and an occasional picture disruption were distracting however the production was magnificent; the music was beautiful and the intermission interviews were really fun and informative. The interviews in particular added much to the performance. I have seen this opera many times but never have I have been able to see the expressions on the faces of the singers. Yes there were technical difficulties but there were also technical triumphs. The female leads stole the show--beautiful voices and powerful performances. I will attend other MET performances and hope the technical problems are corrected. The theater gave us free reentry passes for a move and I appreciated that.

The production of Zeffirelli's "war horse" is beautiful but the overhead camera with the Busby Berkley effects is laughable and jarring. The technical feed was dreadful and this is the 2nd opera to experience these problems......Tosca being the first but this was the worst. Ramey was, as always, a pleasure, Poplavskaya was above average. Having seen Guleghina in Otello, I was wary about this performance and I was correct. Besides her wooden emoting on cue and then chewing up the scenery, would someone please tell her that diamond studs, a contemporary diamond ring and a french manicure are not appropriate accessories for this opera! She had the same long nails for Otello. Very distracting.

The technical problems mentioned in previous reviews were distracting but not overwhelming. I agree that the first act could have used better lighting for the big screen and the theater lighting before the performance and during intermissions was terrible. These things aside, Turandot was glorious. The staging and costuming were outstanding and the singing was up to the Met's high standards. The interviews between acts provided an informative view of the singers, especially Charles Anthony's brief recollections of a 50+ year career at the Met. It is very interesting to watch the tremendous amount of work that goes into the assembly of the sets.

Turandot (for me) is a spectacle - an opera to be SEEN, and not at all interesting to just listen to... And this Zeffirelli production is indeed a spectacular spectacle! Marina Poplavskaya 's Liu was clearly the best, but the others were just fine. Interviews were great! The (satellite-based?) technical problems were annoying but our cinema management announced at the end of Act One that it was happening across the country and being worked on, and we would be compensated - as we were as we left at the end - we were all handed a free ticket for any show in the future (worth up to $24). Surely the problems will be fixed by the Encore presentation...

The opera was magnificent, but I can't rate it higher than poor because of the horrible viewing experience caused by technical blackouts during critical parts of the performance. After 27 signal losses in the first act, I stopped counting. I would not recommend this particular HD showing to friends.
From the caustic comments I received from the opera loving patrons I spoke to, if the transmission difficulties are not surmounted, I fear the future of the Met HD program is in jeopardy.

Yes: there were transmission glitches. Yes: the Zeffirelli production is over the top. As it's supposed to be. But the singing was wonderful. Anyone who wasn't moved by Marina Poplavskaya' s "Liu" wasn't awake. Giordani tossed off "Nessun dorma" as if it were the easiest aria in the tenor repertoire. I heard the aria, not the hype that usually accompanies it. The intermission features are delightful -- a part of opera we would never see otherwise. Patricia Racette was an excellent host -- unlike Renee Fleming who manages to make anybody's comment about herself. The Met HD broadcasts are a wonderful gift to millions across the world -- glitches and all.

I feel I have yet to see a truly first rate production of Turandot, this being my first. The Zefferelli sets were unsurpassed...the voices fair to good. But the frequent picture static, punctuated with a complete loss of sound, and an occasional total loss of the video transmission prevented me from being carried away into this entrancing opera. I would recommend this only to opera buffs, and then with the caveat already described. I was not ready for the possibility of the glitches in the transmission, and I attended with a confidence that the technology was reliable. I was not told otherwise. Might it be more realistic for the Met HD production organization to include a description that states the possiblity of transmission problems?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I loved the production of Turandot. Howver the transmission had numerous interruptions and sometimes spoiled the flow of the opera. I recommend these live performances to all my friends and it seems that "word of mouth" is the only way they hear about it. There is no advertising done in advance of the performances so a lot of perople do not know about it.

This movie was a disaster! It was beset with both video and audio problems which were totally distracting. The video was "dull" and hard to see at times. The audio had lapses of 2-3 seconds to up to 20-30 seconds throughout. The theatre was dirty and the environment less than "operatic" with people talking, eating popcorn and spilling drinks!!! A never to be repeated experience.

This HD presentation was spoiled by frequent audio and video dropouts. However, of several HD presentations from the Metropolitan Opera, this was the only transmission with such flaws. Marina Poplavskaya was the MVP of this performance, but the rest of the cast, was good, with the exception of Giordano who had pitch problems in fortissimo.

The were dropouts of audio and video at cruclal moments...disturbed me and my partner so much that we walked out after the first act and requested a refund! The lighting was miserable for a broadcast, the stage so dimly lit that vision of the people on stage was severely limited! The singing in the first act was okay, but not the magnificent standard of the Met!

Unfortunately, the transmission had intermittent black and sound outs. The movie screen was very dark and I don't know whose fault that was.
I was disappointed in Zefferelli's production which I thought was too busy.
Except for Marcello Giordani I thought the singers were average for opera singers.
I recommend it because it was live from the Met and the closest we opera lovers here in Iowa could get to it.

This was my first experience whatchng the Met Opera in HD. I was disappointed with the audio and video feed.
However I was thrilled with the performances of all lead and supporting characters. I had heard the Met put on lavish productions and was happily surprised tht this was true. It was a wonderful production.
One other thing. When I arrived at the complex, i was told that seating would not take place until 15 mnutes before the performance began. However at 12:30, the theater was 3/4 full. It would have been helpful to know the correct seating time so we could have obtained a better seat.

Contrary to prior review, I found most of the satelite problems minor with the exception of one outage in second act. These things, unfortunately, happen with live satelite transmissions. And the theatre gave out passes for a future movie. The singers were fine, certainly not the greatest, but more than average and I agree about Ramey, always pleases.
This is a fine production but as all Zeffirelli work a little too much for my taste, but beautiful just the same.

Even if there were NOT inexcusable technical problems, Ramey and Poplavskaya were the only singers with an ounce of acting ability or stage presence (Giordani was DOA) - an issue rather compounded in close up camera shots. We burst out laughing when Turandot rose up from behind the fussy noisy set like a cross between Fosca in Sondheim's Passion and a Vallium addicted Buddha. I get the concept that it's "all about the voice" in opera, but this challenges suspending disbelief beyond the breaking point. Thankfully the theatre manager refunded our money without question. I would encourage ALL consumers who payed for this technical nightmare to seek refunds - maybe the Met will wake up.

Sadly, the broadcast was marred due to technical difficulties. The management explained it was a "global issue" and offered a refund after the first act. My friends and I left. Were it not for the glitches in the sound transmission, this would have been a wonderful performance. The stage setting by Zefferelli was outstanding - perhaps even too splendid - and the musical performances were fine. However, the entre-act interviews were terribly repetitive and unnecessary. An intermission should be the same as at the actual performance: the curtain goes down, the lights come up, everybody rushes for the bathrooms.

my favorite opera was marred by not only audio and visual interruptions but by the lack of light and clarity during the first and last acts. Scenes instead of being Zeffereli's brilliance came on much too muted. This has been true of the last two HD operas as well. Why do they have to be so dark and hurt my eyes????

It's not technically a movie; you are watching the opera transmitted live as it's being performed at the Met in New York. The opera was amazing; however, the sound kept going in and out and at a few points, the screen went blank altogether. So the technical aspects of watching the opera were very annoying. We see the Opera Live in HD several times each year, so that particular problem needs to be worked on. The theatre apologized by giving everyone a free pass to a future movie. A very nice gesture!

Frequent audio and occasional video dropout, which we were informed originated with the broadcaster, ruined this satellite broadcast of Puccini's Turandot. Were it not for the technically sub-par broadcast this Franco Zeffirelli production would have rated five stars for set design and costuming. Vocally the performances of the four principals were only slightly above average with the exception of Samuel Ramey who never ceases to please.
