Of course, this is not a movie- it is a live performance from the Metropolitan Opera streamed to an HD screen in a movie theater. For anyone interested in opera -and i would guess that if you're not interested, you have never allowed yourself to be exposed to one- this is an experience which far surpasses any movie. I have seen Das Rheingold many times at the opera, and as an ensemble cast this was the best I have ever seen. The production was technologically fascinating, and the orchestra, as it always is with James Levine, thrilling.
This HD presentation was spoiled by frequent audio and video dropouts. However, of several HD presentations from the Metropolitan Opera, this was the only transmission with such flaws. Marina Poplavskaya was the MVP of this performance, but the rest of the cast, was good, with the exception of Giordano who had pitch problems in fortissimo.
