I admit to being a Sondheim "groupie", but must say that this was a fast-paced, fun- filled 2 1/2 hours, with a superb cast . . . could have watched several more hours of this troupe's antics.
While the overall performance was incredible and moving, numerous sound track and picture blackoouts marred the effect. Thge technical glitches have to be overcome or audiences will revolt.
Anyone who has seen the previews knows exactly how this film is going to end, but the journey makes seeing it worthwhile. There are some remarkably funny scenes AND there are some remarkably predictable moments. Both actors seem totally natural in their roles, but Katherine Heigl's role is a bit over the top and not truly believable. Gerard Butler plays his role perfectly.
Totally captivating , honest, warm portrayal of opera audition process, as seen through the eyes of several competitors and those who coach, mentor and judge them. Like A Chorus Line, the film shares the stories of the dedication and hard work, the commitment and sacrifices, the triumphs and disappointments of a number of young singers as they make the arduous and trying journey from local auditions to the stage of The Metropolitan Opera in New York and the chance to sing with the Met's orchestra.. Ultimately, it's a story about recognition and validation. Everyone should see this movie whether or not you love opera, or have even been to an opera. You'll fall in love with these young people .
