The best Hoffmann yet! (Well...I will always love Joan Sutherland's all-three roles performance...especially her Olympia - but Kathleen Kim's version was TERRIFIC!) Netrebko, Lindsey, Gubanova, Held - all gorgeous!!! And Calleja's Hoffmann - a tour de force!!!! The production...very interesting...am wondering exactly how the partial nudity was toned down for the matinee...? If you missed the Live HD, RUN to get tickets for the Encore!!!!
Turandot (for me) is a spectacle - an opera to be SEEN, and not at all interesting to just listen to... And this Zeffirelli production is indeed a spectacular spectacle! Marina Poplavskaya 's Liu was clearly the best, but the others were just fine. Interviews were great! The (satellite-based?) technical problems were annoying but our cinema management announced at the end of Act One that it was happening across the country and being worked on, and we would be compensated - as we were as we left at the end - we were all handed a free ticket for any show in the future (worth up to $24). Surely the problems will be fixed by the Encore presentation...
Singing, sets, costumes - all just OUTSTANDING!!!! Not a single criticism...well...the acting was mostly pretty good and I don't really know how they might have improved it - sometimes the music makes them do little walks back and forth something like the frilly bits we see in traditional Handel performances. BTW, does anyone know what was dropped (and expertly swept up by the dancer as he did his final "swoop") in the first ballet sequence?
I absolutely recommend the Encore in November to everyone!
The staging was definitely a little strange and because of earlier NYT and TWP reviews I expected to be put off a bit by it...but it was just excellent! The singing and acting by EVERYONE were OUTSTANDING!!!! I took two opera newbies who were indeed impressed. One small criticism/question - which company is insuring Dessay and Florez while the bed they are standing on is twirled around?????
The best Butterfly I have ever seen! Outstanding singing, acting, staging and costumes!!! And I am generally not a Puccini fan... Butterfly and Pinkerton were, of course, wonderful, but so were Suzuki and Sharpless - and Goro...
One TINY criticism - the sound volume was just a fraction too high in the cinema where I saw it...
