I liked the film. My only real exposure to Sherlock Holmes was the collection of black and white films starring Basil Rathbone in the title role. I think he would have approved of this modern take on the character.
I liked the bond between Holmes and Watson. The fact that Watson was not the blithering sidekick (whom I thoroughly enjoyed) played by Nigel Bruce in the old films was a welcome nuance to the Sherlock Holmes story I had in my mind.
I could appreciate the "Matrix" style action scenes. I thought they were well established right in the beginning of the film and added to the piece when they could easily have been distracting or even silly.
The ending was exactly the style I wanted.

why make THIS movie? what was the point of taking a brilliant literary creation who epitomizes the rational man and turning him into just another wise-cracking brawling super agent? why not just invent an alternative Victorian era sleuth- say Schmendrick Smith- and start from scratch? The only thing missing was a wild horse drawn carriage chase against traffic in downtown London.. uh oh, I forgot..there is already a sequel being written. I may have just been a spoiler. That all said, Downey and Jude were fine and the sets excellent.

film. The period atmosphere, costumes had the grittiness of 18th century Briton. I would recommend with no caveats!

I didn't want to see this movie at first because I am such a fan of the Sherlock Holmes movies of my era; however, when I learned that Robert Downey Jr. was in it I knew it must be good. He never disappoints. Although, they updated the characters of Holmes and Watson to fit the psyche of modern day detectives, the movie was fantastic....I loved the new theme. Instead of seeing the perfectionism in Holmes, we see the neuroticism. It gives explanation to why his character was such a genius and Law was brilliant playing an updated Watson. I loved the action, the scenery of “what London would have looked like” with its over crowed streets and seedy marginal society. Holmes and Watson fit right in. I give it 5 stars.

The movie is filled with snappy comments between Holmes and Watson that makes absolutely no sense in many cases and does not draw reactions from the audience. I've seen many Sherlock Holmes titles with Nigile Rathbone and others, and I must say that the director of this movie was way off base. It was entertaining from a "movie" perspective with the tricky multimedia, but the "plot" was absurb.

Well Robert Downey Jr is really getting into the melancholy intellectual super hero genera and doing it well. The movie got a little tedious in the middle but ended well with the great possibility of a sequel.

I was never a Holmes fan, but they took the Holmes saga and gave it a more up todate action and humor. i never lost interest in the movie. I would recommened this to anyone who likes action packed movies.

Well acted and true to the Sherlock Holmes genre. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect as the eccentric Sherlock Holmes with Jude Law as a believable helper. I would highly recommend this move be seen in theaters as it will loose something on rental. Great lead in for a sequel!!

Kudos to Guy RItchie for re-envisioning Sherlock, as well as Sherlock's relationship with Watson. Downey & Law are marvelous together, with a Sherlock that's strong in body as well as mind and Watson possessing a backbone and a life separate from Sherlock. Victorian London is shown as gritty.......not a frill or ruffle anywhere. Good pacing, good mystery, fantastic chemistry between Sherlock and Watson. Quite a bit of fighting--which I do not like--.but fun to see how Sherlock applies his analytic brain to violent physical activity. As a long-time fan of Sherlock and as more of a "chick" type of movie lover, I could've hated this movie. I didn't. Go see it!

I had heard this film was okay so I had low expectations but i was pleasantly surprised. the writing was excellent, the acting, excellent.
Downey and Law are both so incredibly talented and work perfectly in this duo. I am a fan of both and they dd not let me down in performance or charisma.
This film was worth the price of admission.

Sherlock is certainly shown as a wilder character than previous renditons. The movie is grimy, brutal and complicated. I loved it! Lots of action and the plot was awesome, and complex, but it kept you on your toes - just as a Sherlock story should. The music was also great.

Very entertaining movie. Highly recommended as a movie experience. Robert Downey Jr. is at his usual eclectic pitch while Jude Law manages to reign him in about the time he starts going over the top. Background and scenery are very authentic and put you in the time and place. Supporting cast is great, I especially liked Eddie Marsan's Inspector LaStrade which was played extremely well by the actor.

I really enjoyed this film with my husband. We enjoyed the adventure of Sherlock Holmes' latest mystery. I could see this Holmes & Watson as a great team that could easily do numerous movies. The movie was well done. If I had one thing to complain about, it would be that the story line--or the mystery itself--we kind of a strange one. I grew up watching Holmes and thought this story wasn't a classic, but was rather far-fetched and dark. That being said, the movie, the characters, the scenery...were all very well done!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie. It was extremely well written, acted and directed. There was a true sense of realism portrayed in this movie. Both Jude Law and Robert Downey worked extremely well together. This is a must see movie.

A few slow moments, mid movie, but fast-paced, well-thought, and exciting; left enough open for an intelligent sequel. Worth the time and the hype. Took my kids, 10 year-old great, maybe a little "too real" for the 8 year-old.

I really liked this movie. It was very entertaining. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law did a great job in their roles. It reminded me of The Da Vinci Code. I also liked the way they brought everything together at the end, in case you didn't figure it out yourself.

Sherlock Holmes was good, but not great because it dragged a little and was not true to what Sherlock Holmes is about.
They made Sherlock into more of a physical superhero than an intellectual one, which is what the books describe him as.
There were some good scenes and the story was an interesting one. Better for a DVD.

With all the warnings about how the movie takes too many liberties with the Holmes tradition -- it was a fun adventure, beautiful visuals, two fabulous (and gorgeous) actors, who could ask for more? And Holmes WAS very intelligent and appropriately verbose. I'm ready for the sequels!

Downey and Law both stole the show with their performance. Wonderfully done. The action and special effects were what one expects, but frankly I wouldn't have missed it. The craft of acting has been caramelized by special effect spectacularus. "They" could have produced this movie closer to a play with fewer computer generated "props" and still scored big because of the acting and script. The script, yes it has one! Very interesting, great dialogue and in the correct era no less.
I enjoyed the movie and recommend it.

Overall, the movie was very good. It did seem to start slow and drag a little in some spots. Also, it probably could have been wrapped up a little sooner. Jude Law was very good as Watson. Whenever Robert Downey, Jr. started to go a little over the top in his portrayal of Holmes, he was able to reign him back in and on track. Exactly what Watson did for Holmes. I really enjoyed the great camera angles and filming effects, and the banter between the two characters got you through the slow spots. I would recommend this movie, but maybe more as a rental instead of at movie theater prices.
