It's important that in these times when so much emphasis is placed on honoring our heroes, we don't forget those brave Americans who fought and sacrificed by going against the mainstream. By making sure that civil rights were not denied some of us, Harvey Milk helped to secure freedom for all of us. This movie is one of Van Sant's best, Danny Elfman's score is excellent as usual, Penn's portrayal is amazing and will live as one of his career highlights. Josh Brolin is great in portraying the tightly-wound darkness that Dan White always seems to have in the old footage of him. Soon to be a classic, you should catch this on the big screen while you can.

I wasn't sure I wanted to see this movie. Sean Penn did an outstanding job playing the role of Harvey Milk. During Milk's term, I was in high school being ridiculed, taunted, and teased for being "different". I knew nothing of Milk's passion in fighting for civil rights and gay rights/issues. I wept at the end thanking Milk for fighting for civil rights. I am ashamed to say that I sit back and continually hand over the power to other gay/straight people to shame and ostracise me for not being more than I am. I've reached a point where I've become intolerant of gay men. I suppose I am more intolerant of those who have tried to destroy me during my life, both gay and straight. Thank you Sean Penn and thank you Harvey Milk!!!!!

Gus Van Sant's biographical film gives the slain public figure his due recognition as a naturally born leader though it's been over 30 years since his assassination by a disgruntled colleague. This was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. Sean Penn inhabits every role he plays and Milk is probably one of his best ever. Every actor in the film did an amazing job bringing their characters to life. I was very impressed by James Franco in particular since his previous work has been mostly unremarkable.
Gus Van Sant is a genius. This film should be required viewing for anyone who is interested in the development of gay rights and civil liberties in this country. I hope that this film will be properly recognized as the masterpiece it is.

This was a very intense movie. It shows how the San Francisco area was truly one of the first to fight for Gay rights. It was wonderful seeing that old footage because I remember most of the events. Harvey Milk should be honored for all he has done for the Gay communtiy in his short lifetime. Sean Penn deserves the Oscar nod, he is a chameleon. I do, however, agree with most of the other reviews, it was a tad too long.

Milk is a fantastic, historically accurate portrayal of the first openly gay politician in the United States. Sean Penn delivers an intense, committed performance that embodies the gay activist down to the most minute detail. Also, Josh Brolin gives a disturbingly realistic performance of Dan White. Overall, the acting is fantastic and worth every moment. Although the story tends to be a little lengthier than necessary, and a few of the scenes could have been shaved (I found myself getting a little "itchy" towards the end), the caliber of acting and the honesty of the story makes this a must see.

Good movie? Yes. Great movie? No, I didn't think so. The acting was quite good all throughout. I was pretty familiar with the story so for me it was just a little dull and drawn out. I'm not sure it needed to be as long as it was.

Excellent movie; dragged just a little bit at points but generally made you care about all the different people who were part of Harvey's life and movement. A very sad story for that moment; things have come far in some ways and in other ways we're still stuck in that mode of judging. I think I was expecting a lot of gay people to be in the theatre but it was mostly middle-aged hetero couples like my husband and myself.
