I heard the author speak of the book on the Oprah Show a while back and immediately ordered the book for a friend going through a divorce at the time.
The even though the movie did not express what the character was learning about herself in each place, she befriend wonderful people and was able to reconnect with her self. It also showed how simple things slow down our life. Reflection opens up our life and awareness increases our life. Other than Italy, the countries visited have a lot struggles with just daily lives. I am still working there significance out for places visited. I could see a Eat Pray Love workshops.

Follows the book as closely as possible without being 4 hrs long. I would see it again. I love Julia Roberts & I like to see her in anything. The unknown actors were good for the parts. I would have seen it without Julia Roberts because I had read the book.

The best thing about this movie is the cinematography. I had little sympathy for this woman who has it all and spends the first half of the movie crying for no apparent reason. She had to "drop" out and go to these countries after already having traveled around the world for her writing job. She discovers that eating, praying and loving are what life is all about. Guess what, I learned that when I was a child. I could not identify with this self-indulgent, self-centered, whinny woman. I did like Javier Bardem's part, however. My sympathy was all for him. And, finally, Julia Robert's upper lip was very distracting. I found myself wondering if it was going to bust wide open from being so swollen.

Julia Roberts always a pleasure to watch. The movie didn't have as much substance or emotion as the book. The heart and soul briefly recognized. In the book, you could relate with Liz on so many levels. She is a very 3 dimensional individual, though in the movie not so much. The movie is a brief summary, not delving into many of the significant faucets of her life. Some of the more meaningful characters and their stories were pushed aside, which took away from the value of the story in whole. I believe the acting was very good, though a limited portrayal of Liz, no fault of the actors. Camera’s, were too focused on headshots, in many scenes. The main focus of the book was about a journey of life and finding ones self through some type of religion or another (spiritual being); the movie focused on one individual, and touched on the love story.
Though I feel the movie is well worth watching, read the book after the movie and you will fill in some of the lost valuable pieces.

We had a girl's day out with 5 of us and we had looked forward to a fun movie as we love, love Julia Roberts. Sadly, we were all left with disappointment. It seemed like a dark downer to us. Even the scenery was not as spectacular as we had hoped. The other characters in the movie were dull. There was great potential for this movie, but it missed it.
It was 1/2 hour too long. If only Julia had had some really bright spots somewhere in the movie that you could believe. I am glad we saw it, but we were let down. Sorry, Julia! We still love you!

The music was eclectic and enjoyable and the scenery was at times spectacular and moving. The story itself and acting were also pleasing. The movie was easy to identify with and it was great to see characters grow and expand. I took my sister for her birthday and we both were glad we experienced "Eat Pray Love."

Books and movies are apples and oranges, so to try to compare the two is futile. I loved the book and I was smiling throughout the movie - didn't want it to end - and came home and re-read all my underlined portions in the book. Finally a movie worth the $10 and I may just see it again!

I liked the movie, but I enjoyed it as much as I did because I read the book . The story lingered in my thoughts long after I read it. The movie scenes were beautifully filmed but the script lacked the soul and poignancy of the book. I thought that Julia Roberts was not the right woman to cast as Liz.. I am a huge fan of JR but she does not bring enough character depth to the part. I did enjoy the movie more than I thought I would. Bardem was rather yummy, but even his character seemed not to be fully developed. I agree that some of the more meaningful parts of the book were left out or only touched on. The effect on Liz of her time in India was almost left out of the movie. The movie was really not long enough to build each part of her story and the people in/out of her life that year and the switch between countries was poorly handled. Add another 30 minutes and give me the impact of the book and I give it 5 stars. It is because of the book and my travels that I liked the movie and recommend it.

So I haven't read the book, that being said- I enjoyed it! Beautiful scenery and you could really feel the emotions through the characters that they were trying to convey.
One of the things that I really enjoy about Julia Roberts, is how she's able to make you feel what she's "feeling." For this reason, I'm always up for seeing one of her flicks.
I agree with other reviewers that it wasn't really clear when she went from one place to the next. But that was alright.
Overall, I'd go see it again. It spoke to me and made me think about my own life. I don't go to see movies to determine if their prize-worthy or not, I go for entertainment and that's it.

I read Eat, Pray, Love before seeing this movie. Unfortunately, in the time allotted, there just wasn't the ability to convey all the emotions and relationship developement from the book. Also distracting to me was the fact that "time" was off. It seemed like she was jumping from place to place when in reality her divorce was more drawn out and she spent several months in each location with many more experiences than what was portrayed. I did love the scenery! The locations in Bali were especially beautiful. My personal experience was enhanced by the fact that the theater offerred a corresponding dinner featuring Italian, Indian, and Balinese food. Perhaps this movie will become more popular on DVD when groups of people can recreate my "dinner and a movie" experience. This movie lends itself really well to that.

my wife took me to see this movie and i had expectations of it being a "chick flick'. to my surprise i found it to be an enjoyable movie experience. i enjoyed the story and the performances especially richard jenkins as the texan. i enjoyed the scenery of Italy, India, and Bali even more. i will tell people to go see it.

"As inspiring and lovely as Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat Pray Love" was to read, the movie seemed shallow and a little careless. The constant barrage of stunning glances and smiles - and the occasional tear - by Julia Roberts - cannot replace the thoughtful insights Gilbert and her companions offer in the book. It is beautifully shot though" I left the theatre wanting more, and like another reader said "I had to go back to the book to fill in the blanks left by the movie" and I've only read 1/3 of the book.

The movie version was a completely empty version of the book. The characters were horribly underdeveloped, and if Julia Roberts (and, Bardem) weren't in it, it would have been truly unwatchable. Some of her "best friends" in Italy don't even have names or stories - literally , they just sit at all of the dinner tables. Gilbert is an incredible writer, which is what made the book engaging. Her story comes across in the movie as completely narcissistic, boring, and inane.

Usually when a best selling novel is turned into a major motion picture, it doesn't do the book justice. "Eat Pray Love" continues that tradition. It does not do author Elizabeth Gilbert's best selling memoir justice. Julia Roberts plays Elizabeth Gilbert, a woman who has it all (career, money, husband) but wasn't happy with her life. She decides in the middle of the night that she wants a divorce. Her husband tries desperately to hang on to the marriage, but ultimately gives up. Even with the divorce Elizabeth is not happy so she decides to leave her friends and family behind in New York and travel to Italy, India and Bali to try and "Find Herself". The story unfolds from there...
One of the biggest problems with "Eat Pray Love" is that there is no transition from one country to another. Unless Gilbert transported herself to each location via something from Star Trek, she had to fly. There were no scenes showing any airports or planes. You were never presented with any sort of time table, so who knows exactly how long she stayed in any of these locations. I found myself bored at times because some parts of the movie dragged and some of the scenes made no sense.
On a positive note the cinematography is spectacular. I love Italy, so I really enjoyed that portion of Gilbert's journey. You will see Julia Robert's trademark smile and hearty laugh. She will do what she is supposed to do, give you an escape for a couple of hours. Also I loved Viola Davis in this movie, she plays Elizabeth Gilbert's best friend and co-worker.

This was an ambitious undertaking. To turn a book like this into a movie is nearly impossible, as it is the author's words and language that move you as much, if not more, than the story itself (the same thing happened with "Cold Mountain"). But I thought they did a respectable job with the movie version. For viewers that hadn't read the book, though, I can see points where there might be some confusion. (Why, exactly, did she leave her marriage? Although Gilbert did not point to it directly in the book, readers got much more of a sense of her despair than was portrayed in the movie). That said, the movie also had bright spots that I had forgotten in the book, like Richard from Texas. Readers of the book should for sure see this movie; for those who haven't read, still see it, but read the book afterwards. It will come together for you.

I found this movie enjoyable but had expected something deeper. Julia Roberts is always fantastic but there seemed to be something missing in the plot. My daughter loved the book and said they weren't able to capture the depth of the characters as the book had. I found it easy to walk away and not look or thnk back to the movie. Somewhat disappointing in that regard!

Usually I'm not impressed by the movie version of a book, but this time they hit the mark. The country to country transitions were abrupt,, but I could understand the reason for that. I LOVE that the producers weren't afraid to bring "light and love" to a mass audience. I will be seeing it again!

Just finished the book and found the movie pretty close to the original. I found myself choked up from the 1st scene. I will see again soon, and re-read the book. It exposes the quest for God to the masses.

It was definitely a long journey--2hrs15min worth. I love seeing the different places. Italy was not pictured as beautiful as it really is, I was there last year. I found myself wishing we all had the money this lady had to just pick up and travel whenever we don't feel fullfilled. That would be a dangerous thought. Quite a few of us would be on a plane today.I enjoyed the movie, Julia makes any movie good to me, she is great.

You have to give Julia credit for wanting to make something out of this great book - but all that came out was a highly predictable, schmaltzy, superficial, sterile version of what this really could have been.
I was really looking forward to this movie, but what a disappointment. Recommend a remake, would still very much like to see this material succeed in a screen version. Again, thanks to Julia and the supporting actors for trying.
