The movie version was a completely empty version of the book. The characters were horribly underdeveloped, and if Julia Roberts (and, Bardem) weren't in it, it would have been truly unwatchable. Some of her "best friends" in Italy don't even have names or stories - literally , they just sit at all of the dinner tables. Gilbert is an incredible writer, which is what made the book engaging. Her story comes across in the movie as completely narcissistic, boring, and inane.
This movie could not have surprised me more -- it was shot in a clever documentary style, the anti hero lead character was hilarious and charming, and the story was universal. I really don't like science fiction and went to appease my husband -- I was shocked how much I liked it. Great film for a Sunday afternoon.
One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Beautifully written and acted, subtle, with a point of view. Really gives you something to think about regarding the plight of the very realistic characters, our immigration policies, and our way of life. A must see.
I thought it was great --- light, funny, great cast. I have no idea why people were confused - it was pretty simplistic, an old fashioned "caper" with a little romance thrown in. Great entertainment, well written, attractive people and locations.
