Moving and powerful presentation of this opera. It's very dark, very sad, very Italian, and very Verdi. Singing outstanding; acting good, especially Domingo who truly fits the role of the elderly and wise Boccanegra.

WONDERFUL! The voices were superb,
the orchestra glorius & the intermission features
fascinating. This is a wonderful way to
enjoy opera, since you are given the
opportunity to view the performers from an
unbelievable vantage point. Why not show
all of the Met's productions each season?

Marvelous as ever!!! To be able to see/hear Domingo in this towering baritone role was a pure delight! No interruption of the "feed" from New York at least in Altamonte Springs, FL.
I just wish the audience was younger......at 66 I I brought down the average age in the 60% capacity house.........sad but true, opera is on a slow death in the US........but at least it will be around for the rest of my life! Maybe I'm wrong.....that's why I support the Met each year.

I’d looked forward to this rare Verdi opera all season long but was advised of a satellite feed problem before entering the theater. I suspect that the huge mid-Atlantic snowstorm going on just north of us was the culprit. The audio was unaffected (what glorious singing!), but the broken images jittered continuously; the opera became unwatchable. I left before the first act ended, as did most others. The good news: We were given tickets for the 24FEB encore performance. I’ll be there!

Wasn't a real opera fan but went with a friend who insisted. It was fascinating! It's the original soap opera--but with talent. Watching the action so closely--and having subtitles to tell you what they're singing--was just wonderful. No one is more surprised than I that I loved every minute of the performance. Couldn't believe how the time flew! Got there 2 hours in advance for a good seat. Those die-hard fans go early and read books.

Let me begin by saying that I am indeed a fan of opera.
Although I do agree with other reviewers that the costumes and sets were lovely and the singing was fine, the plot to this story is so outrageously complicated and contrived to be far beyond the realm of belief. And the "acting" so full of over-the-top manufactured emotion that it came close to becoming a parody of itself.
Was the production good? Of course; it's the Met! Was the singing worth the price of admission? You bet'cha! Would I recommend this opera to a friend? Probably not. Would I see another staging of Simon Boccanergra? Nope.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Well done performance, with premier singers such as Placido Domingo and James Morris. The backstage scenes and intermission interviews by Rene Fleming add significant value. Despite the overall excellence, I was somewhat put off by the strenuous facial grimaces of Adrienna Pieczonka, which added an unwanted element to the story. It's hard enough for singers to deliver their lyrics in various recumbent and reclining positions, as they are required to by the story line and staging, without adding drawnout mouths and crinkly brows to the mix.

True to the whole season of MetOpera in HD this was a superb experience. The cinematography, acting, and design were very good and the singing was glorious. This really brings the excitement of opera to the people. I felt as if I was watching a masterpiece of painting come alive. Not only were the stars fantastic, but those with smaller roles were also stunning singers/actors.

The Met in HD is a fantastic idea. As usual the picture was too dark. This production evokes Genoa nicely but needs some spiffing up. I'm glad Domingo is doing this; he was excellent in the role. Morris needs to retire; his lowest notes are gone. After a rough start Pieszonka steadily improved and was a pleasure to listen to. I especially enjoyed Stephen Gaertner's portrayal as Paolo.
This opera is a little known gem, with gorgeous music, even in the smallest sung-through recitatives. The music itself is very emotional, the singing makes it more moving. This opera will never be a big crowd pleaser because the plot is so dark, but it needs to be in the repertory of major theatres.

The drama was thrilling, acting out of this world, singing excellent by all of the cast. Domingo was in great form, I was at the edge of my seat. I did not expect this opera to be so great, or of the best of all time, certainly best this season. This old production was outstanding, costumes very colorful.

Absolutely stunning production. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute; the music, the singers, the staging, Verdi. My only complaint is that most of the production was done with very dim lighting. For those of us who are visually impaired (which included many of those who were watching in our audience) the production was very hard to see. Fortunately, the music and the singing were flawless and beautiful. I always enjoy listening to the commentary by Renee Fleming and look forward to her production of Armida. Bravo to Simon Boccanegra.

Not accostomed to " Opera/HD", I'm delighted to recommend this innovative attempt to promote opera to those who love creative expressions of past musical masters. Reaching those who are unable to participate in attending the Metropolitan, for whatever reason, are now able to enjoy the cultural and creative contributions of renowed artists. Kudos, to the Metropolitan producers, foundations and artists for providing the public this marvelous opportunity!

Having read less than laudatory reviews by NY Times Anthony Tomassini and others, I was very pleasantly surprised by this performance. I loved it! Plácido Domingo's portrayal and acting were superb! As far as his singing, I am not technically knowledgeable enough to critique, but for me his acting more than compensated for any inadequacies. Bravo to the entire cast!
I did find one thing disconcerting: Plácido as the father of Maria/Amelia looked older than James Morris, who sang the role of her grandfather.
PS I think the camera caught James Levine nodding off at the podium just as the curtain went up after the intermission following the Prologue!

How could I not go to see Placido Domingo in a role as a baritone?!?! Always revered his powerful, very-Verdi tenor voice and I was ecstatic at this performance! Giordani was fabulous -- I've always been his fan, in the face of the perpetual sitters-on-the-fence. And James Morris is a national treasure! If only we Americans could "knight" our national treasures! The entre'acte backstage look at scenery changes would make any opera fan/voyeur happy. Loved the "maestro to the podium" call for Maestro Levine at the opening interview. The singing was majestic, the staging terrific. Thank you, thank you: Peter Gelb and those who make these movie theater telecasts possible!

The theme was a dark plot that could only have been set in renaissance times. Masterfully performed by the reigning masters of Verdi, Domingo and Morris. Unfortunately in the theater (AMC) we attended in Clearwater/Oldsmar FL the presentation was very dark due to either transmission problems or projection problems. The performance was wonderful aside from the technical issues it was a tour-de-force! Bravo!
