I'm a big fan of HD movie theater telecasts of leading Broadway and high culture events! A longtime patron of the Met in HD opera telecasts, I'm thrilled that other music and cultural institutions are embracing the concept, too! This performance was a not-too-be-missed chance to see some of America's top, top stage performers -- and, clearly one of America's premier orchestras -- strut their stuff! It's still with me: the performance, the staging, the music, each and every actor -- and it will sustain me for a long, long time. Bravo, NY Philharmonic! And, Bravo ! Paragon 13 in Coconut Grove -- a terrific venue!
How could I not go to see Placido Domingo in a role as a baritone?!?! Always revered his powerful, very-Verdi tenor voice and I was ecstatic at this performance! Giordani was fabulous -- I've always been his fan, in the face of the perpetual sitters-on-the-fence. And James Morris is a national treasure! If only we Americans could "knight" our national treasures! The entre'acte backstage look at scenery changes would make any opera fan/voyeur happy. Loved the "maestro to the podium" call for Maestro Levine at the opening interview. The singing was majestic, the staging terrific. Thank you, thank you: Peter Gelb and those who make these movie theater telecasts possible!
Elina Aranca's interpretation of the gypsy was smolderingly incredible...her voice terrific, her acting ability equally so. Alagna, too, played Don Jose as the weak and ultimately deranged lover to a "T." I didn't appreciate "Carmen" when I first saw it with Domingo as I could never quite believe Domingo could be such a sap. Staging, direction, costuming, lighting, the redoubtable chorus...all impressive. Hurrah for the young conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, too. A must-see!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This production was fabulous -- voices, acting, music, sets, costuming -- all nonpareil! I've seen a handful of other Met productions on the screen and been pleased, but this one was incredible! I was particularly struck by the lighting and camera work -- absolutely spot-on in capturing and conveying the moods, reactions and gestures -- no matter how fleeting or minor -- of singers and the story. Joseph Calleja, Kate Lindsey, and Kathleen Kim -- bravi!!
