Thank you Mr Gelb. I don't think I would have ever been interested in seeing this work as I always thought of Ambroise Thomas as old as his first name...
But how wrong I was! Very interesting opera indeed.
I was not sure that this new version would please me. I was wrong. Except for a few details (for instance, the portrait of Marie Magdalena showing her naked breast is a total nonsense for that epoch) I enjoyed the new production very much.
Luc Bondy has come up with some great new ideas and we can all profit from it.
I am not a fan of Berlioz grandiloquent proponent of the Catholics' credo of virginity being the goal in a life of virtue but, I must say that I was astounded by Robert Lepage's creativity.
As a visual spectacle alone, it is worth seeing, particularly the first half which presents tableaux of so much color and action that should not be missed. Really beautiful!
