It was a joy to see opera in the truly grand style, with gorgeous sets and costumes true to the period in which the opera is set. The singing was superb, and Placido was born to play Simone Boccanegra, His acting matches his singing; he is truly a "man for all seasons."
I hope that audiences can see that the intense action scenes are a way of reminding us that no group has the right to take over the land and culture of another. What was happening on Pandora is a metaphor for not only what the invading Europeans did to the Native Americans, but what has happened all over the world, throughout history, when one power believes it has the right to invade and assume control over native peoples.
Despite the techical glitches and dark lighting, the Zefferelli production was stunning and the singing, especially Liu, was lovely. Maria Guleghina could have been a compelling Turandot if she had allowed the costumers to give her more height with appropriately regal headpieces. Why would she choose to remove all headgear through so much of the opera, emphasizing her long lank hair rather than find ways to make her look more like the princess she was supposed to be?
