Picture & sound were excellent. Good interview with the musical director Fabio Luisi who played the harpsicord & conducted at the same time. Enjoyed the lead, Mariusz Kwiecien as Don Giovanni (he was originally going to be the Matador in Carmen last year but got sick). He was very sexy, funny & naughty. His servant was also well done exuding masculinity. The rest of the cast was just average, none of them physically appealing & voices forgettable. The sets were blah & costumes just OK. Seemed too long but then so many of Mozarts songs had lots & lots of repetition, I guess that was the style of the day.
After a 40 minute wait it started. Very well staged and acted. A combination of classic music and costumes in a fanciful and mesmerizing setting. Very beautiful voices and convincing acting brought Wagner into a new light. Robert LePage is an extremely visionary creative producer. Getting such ideas to the stage is a daunting task and was worth the delay to get it right. I highly recommend this performance to the rest of the world. It is the next bench-mark. It was also very informative showing the musical preparation and the insights of the brass players in the performance. Special kudos to James Levine and the very knowledgeable introspection of Placido Domingo.
A wonderful presentation by a stellar cast. René Fleming was brilliant as always along with her great supporting cast. Unfortunately the theater we saw it in (AMC Woodlands, Oldsmar Florida) had an incorrectly color- balanced projector that distorted the colors and did detract significantly from an otherwise beautiful production.
Destroyed the performances by a wonderful cast. 3D will not attract serious opera lovers & will not encourage newbies to want to see the real thing. Sound & camera shots very poor. Never felt connected to the characters. After last year's Carmen from Met HD I guess everything else pales by comparison but this was just a waste of time & money
A triumphant work of modern history-telling through a consummate art form. The stark staging and passionate acting and action was both moving and exhilarating. An excellent contrast of story and reality. Kudos to Adams, Sellars and the Met.
An excellent production with wonderful and gifted performers. Great action for an opera. Reminded me of TV westerns of the fifties. Creative and believable sets and costumes. The back stage views and interviews definitely contribute to this operatic theatrical performance.
This was my first experience with Wagner & although it was not my favorite style the staging & orchestration more than made up for my dislike of fantasy. Such creativity deserves 5 stars. You needed to be prepared for 3 hours of sitting as there were no intermissions. Also the pre-show backstage sort of ruined the special effects for me, but I guess most people wanted to see how the "magic" was created. I look forward to the rest of the season with more conventional operas & plots but glad to have been part of it. Perhaps by the spring & the next installment I'll be able to appreciate it more.
The theme was a dark plot that could only have been set in renaissance times. Masterfully performed by the reigning masters of Verdi, Domingo and Morris. Unfortunately in the theater (AMC) we attended in Clearwater/Oldsmar FL the presentation was very dark due to either transmission problems or projection problems. The performance was wonderful aside from the technical issues it was a tour-de-force! Bravo!
This magnificent performance again kept me spellbound. This time I could concentrate on the more technical issues: the incredible sound that the digital age is able to deliver to us, the "scenery"... the revolving stages, & above all the remote camera work that gives all of us attending this at theaters around the world the most FANTASTIC up close & personal views of a stellar cast. Bravo. I will be purchasing the DVD as soon as it's available.
A very spirited performance with a very appealing cast. A smouldering Carmen, a brilliant Don José and a very believable Escamillo. Very well and inventively staged. A very lively conductor who appeared to enjoy his role. Overall a more than satisfying experience.
