This movie redefined the whole Star Trek universe from the ground up. It was action-packed enough to keep non-trekkies fully entertained, and loaded with enough "inside jokes" to keep all Trekkies rolling in their seats. When you go to see this movie, you've got to go in knowing it is a "set up" movie. This lays the groundwork for a whole new set of movies. As such, quite a bit of time is based on dealing with introductions, but they do it in a light-hearted fashion that makes you enjoy the introductory to the Enterprise crew.

Long-time trekkie, I was very apprehensive at a new Star Trek film. But THIS WAS AWESOME! Plot - several plot lines that worked well together. Actors captured the essense of their characters complete with each one's particular sense of humor. Nods to the original series. And stunning special effects brought to life by IMAX. See it in IMAX and see it twice.

JJ Abrams solves the biggest problem facing projects like this, prequels with a wealth of established mythology. Unfortunately, to avoid spoilers I can't tell you HOW he does it, but rest assured it works great.
The cast is just fine, conveying the spirit of the original actors without imitating them.
Incidentally I saw this in digital IMAX a couple of days after LASIK eye surgery. My doctor may have done too good a job: I was sitting in the 10th row and I frequently could make out the individual pixels. Technology - it solves problems and creates new ones at the same time.

Remakes are a tricky thing. If you're smart, you've got two audiences that you're trying to satisfy. Those who are unaware of the original, and those loyal many who are.
J.J. Abrams and his team were careful enough to keep as much as possible from the original series without being slaves to it.

Effects: Superlative. And, they never really get in the way of anything which is quite impressive.
Story: Believable/Plausible, especially considering Trek's historical reliance on time travel.
Quality: WWAAYY above most previous Trek movies. The Wrath of Khan is still better, but not by much. However, the music score, while adequate, doesn't really do the story justice.
Redshirts Killed: 1. C'mon -- EVERY worthy Trek episode has to kill at least one. His death is quite spectacular, or not, depending on your point of view.
Overall value: $9.50 out of $10. A stellar movie, no pun intended.

This is definitely worth your money. The action starts right at the beginning all the way to the end. The characters are unbelievable, esp. Dr. McCoy, whose portrayal is right on the dot. Great cast, great story, the movie is well-made. I would like to see it again!

Not just the best Trek movie ever made but a great movie for everyone.
The writers achieved an approach that appealed to a fresh audience as well as including dozens of easter eggs for experienced trekkers. (Google Captain Christopher Pike to see the significance of his appearance).
Re-energized with modern special effects and fresh actors, this prequel masterfully charts a course from the origins of the series into, hopefully, strange new worlds where no Trek has gone before with an ending that felt like a very, very promising beggining of a whole new line of Trek sequels.

I went with my two boys. We got there only 30 minutes early and were worried that our 3rd row seats would be too close. We didn't need to worry. The movie was great and the IMax was amazing. I do recommend getting there early and sitting in the middle. That would be the best experience.

Just what the doc ordered, great action & story even if the science is a little off I didn't think about it too much. My only gripes is that it felt the characters were rushed on a little TOO fast we barely got to know them so Im hoping the next one will have a little breathing room. Also Nero was cool but didn't have nearly enough screen time, he was basically the bad guy 'out there' who you see briefly here and there and I wanted to see him chew some scenery! Anyway this is great escapism and cant wait for the next one.

I loved this movie. I'm not much of a "Treky" but I loved this movie anyway. Even though I haven't really kept up w/the movies or the TV series I found that this movie was probably the best I've seen all year! It's a must see. Seeing it at IMAX was the best way to go.

I had high expectations going into this movie from the previews and hype. But this movie surpassed my expectations right from the start. The cast was perfectly selected for the roles and had great chemistry. The storyline was strong and kept moving. The special effects were spectacular. The stuck up a-holes who gave it a bad review need to get over themselves. It was overall a well done movie and a great way to reset the franchise.

Just have to say you really have to see this movie even if your not a die hard Star Trek fan. Great action and visual effects. First time I ever gave a standing ovation at the end of a movie. Excellent movie. All new comers to the Star Trek world will love it as a great story with excellent directing and excellent special effects. Current Trekies will go frantic about how great the movie is and how it keeps with the Star Trek bible. This is an excellent blockbuster all around for everyone! I see the Star Trek saga continueing for a long time to come! I am wondering how things will play out now that the timeline has been altered for the future by events in this film. Great entertainment value, excellent casting and acting, Imax was worth the additional cost, but the storyline could have been better. They alter so many things that are in the future of Star Trek, in essence they created an alternate time-line from traditional Star Trek as everyone knows it and did not resolve this. Simply changing the way it was written toward the end could have resolved these issues.

The movie itself was great as everyone else has posted/advertised. Unfortunately in my area and particular theater (Central FL-Altamonte Springs), AMC marketed this as an IMAX movie when it was basically a digital presentation on a slightly larger screen with some enhanced sound. I'm sure there is some marketing BS to cover the discrepancy, but make sure you see the movie on a properly sized IMAX screen; if its at your local multiplex, chances are it might not be the real deal.

This movie is the PERFECT prequel to the BEST EVER sci-fi series of the past several decades. These new actors are IDEAL in portraying the younger versions of the original cast and their personalities remain true as well. This movie has a great story line, fantastic action scenes, and the perfect amount of humor. I HIGHLY recommend the IMAX experience for this movie!! I will see it again several times on the big screen and then buy it the minute it hits the stores. KUDOS to J J Abrams and the rest of the writers for their EXCELLENCE in remaining true to Gene Roddenberry's creation!!! TREKKIES FOREVER!!

Great adaptation of the original Star Trek premise. Wonderfully written story without much overkill to make it like the original, but tying the storyline with the Trek of old masterfully.

I loved the movie but the IMAX Experience at the 10:30 a.m. showing at the AMC Santa Anita left a lot to be desired. First, there was a ten minute delay due to "projection problems". Ten minutes into the movie we lost the sound for about 30 seconds. Same thing again five minutes later. The audience was noticeably upset.
