Long-time trekkie, I was very apprehensive at a new Star Trek film. But THIS WAS AWESOME! Plot - several plot lines that worked well together. Actors captured the essense of their characters complete with each one's particular sense of humor. Nods to the original series. And stunning special effects brought to life by IMAX. See it in IMAX and see it twice.
Take the gimics from Contact (cryptic communication from an alien source), Mothman Prophecies (Casandra-esque frustration with disaster prevention), and others that I can't mention without giving away the ending. Bottom line is that the story lacked coherence, seeming like about 5 different movies picked up off the editing room floor and put into the same film. Nicolas Cage certainly gives a good performance as the deparate disaster alarmist and then desparate dad - plenty of shouting and crying...playing pretty much the same emotional note throughout. (I like chocolate too, but after about 10 minutes I tire of the taste and want something different).
I love movies with great special effects...and this has it. You'll believe a semi-truck can fly.... I love movies with great characters....and this has it. Batman, Joker, Decker, they are 3 dimensional characters. The Heath-hype is not just hype. I love movies that make me leave the theater still trying to understand what happened. No loose ends, but there is much more to this movie than just an action fantasy. Three thumbs up!!!
