Clearly, this movie is all about showcasing Robert Downey Jr. I'm a big fan of his, but I thought the close ups of him were a little over the top.
Excellent story line, that filled in the blanks quite admirably. Rachel McAdams was wonderful in her role as was Mark Strong ( I loved his character). I thought Jude Law was a little lost in his role or maybe the role was tool lite for an actor of his acclaim.
Clearly this moview is a set up for the sequel which seems to be Mr. Downey's new role in life(play characters in recurring roles).
However, an excellent film, especially the photography and soundtrack. I would definitely recommend this film to friends and family, with the caveat that you really have to be a Robert Downey Jr. fan.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Guy Ritchie's effort of covering the sleuth detective of Baker Street, but per his usual performance, Downey Jr. breathes unexpected new life into Sir Doyle's Holmes. Jude Law is brilliant as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams, as the gorgeous and calculating Irene Adler, and Mark Strong, as the insidious and unkillable Lord Blackwood, also give bang-up performances. The effects and cinematography lend the perfect ambience to a gritty London in the throes of Industrialism. Also look for the uncredited performance of Professor Moriarty (Brad Pitt?). I was pleasantly surprised by the intelligence and wit of this film. Highly recommended!

Movies are not about the actor or director. They should tell a story. When the director and / or actor believe their craft is more important than the story, the movie is invariably a failure. Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. are guilty of this fundamental violation of story telling using the large screen as their medium. I fell asleep. My son fell asleep. Wake us up when you have a story to tell!!!

It is a good film..... but not worth the ticket price. The plot is very slow and the action was stop/start. This is a good film for Guy to tell the world he is back but not the great film I expected.

Entertaining, lots of humor, good special effects, great period costumes and scenery. Was prepared for the 'new' type of characters and thought their chemistry mixed well. Enjoyed Holmes' process of deduction. Worth seeing and discussing afterwards.

Dialog a little difficult to understand but overall a GOOD movie. Saw it in digital format - excellent picture and in DBox - GREAT experience. Well worth the extra money.
Downey, Law and McAdams made the movie with great acting.

The acting in this movie is superb! Downey Jr., Law and Mcadams have a very palpable chemistry that really works! The movie is an excellent mystery that had me guessing right up to the end. I am usually pretty good and solving these mysteries as I watch but this one kept me guessing for quite some time. Excellent action, also! This movie did not drag. I had no trouble understanding the dialogue as some people have noted, not sure what that is about. Highly recommended!

Guy Richie has finally hit the big time with this wonderful action adventure. Downey is Holmes while Jude Law gives us a fresh look at Watson. Rachel McAdams makes a perfect counterpoint to Holmes with her style and smile. The only weakness is the sound; you miss some of Holmes deductions since it isn't THX. Just go with it. A Rock 'n Roll version of Sherlock with a strong cast, excellent writing, and unique cinematography and music. 221B Baker Street will never be the same.

I really enjoyed this movie. There were barely any times where it got slow. Action was really good, the fighting scenes were awesome, and of course Law & Downey Jr were not only extremely sexy, but a good on-screen duo.
Being a reader of Sherlock Holmes books, it sounds like this one may be the 1st in a possible series of more Holmes movies to come; I'm really hoping this is the case b/c I think a sequel may be actually a very good addition to this movie.

The sepia gray tones, detailed setttings, clever plot and charming characters make this a really good outing. The plot was tough to manage for the under 13 crowd, but the cohesive ending made sense to those lost along the way. Downey Jr. & Law have great buddy chemistry and I'll definitely be in the audience for the next Holmes' story.

I'm a Shelockian at heart and this movies is NOT in any way particularly accurate to AC Doyle's actual Sherlock Holmes. That said, Downey is hilarious, the camera work is spectacular, and Law is a gorgeous upgrade from stodgy old Watson. So it's fun if you leave your Sherlock ideas at the door.

I enjoyed this movie very much. I thought the characters were strong and well played. I went with my father in law (in his 80's) and my 16 year old exchange student from Germany and we were all pleased. There were no surprises, but I love the way they portrayed Sherlock's thinking throughout the movie. Although a bit dark, there were a few moments of humour to lighten up the show. We're looking forward to the next one!

Guy Ritchie's overwrought direction draws far too much attention to itself, and away from the story. The wonderful Robert Downey, Jr. is underutilized as he mumbles incoherently throughout much of the movie. While the art direction is compelling, there is way too much emphasis on cute editing tricks and Holmes' fighting skills, and too little on overall character development. I was looking forward to this movie, but was disappointed.

This was set-up for a sequel and I will be anxiously waiting. Fantastic characters and plenty of action. Great dialogue. No complaints - just wish there were more like this to see year-round.

It isn't exactly the Holmes we know from the books, but Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. bring the man to life with their own unique twist. The plot itself is new, but stays true to the tone of the original Mysteries - the mystifying activity of a paranormal antagonist that Holmes must unravel and show for what it truly is. If I have one gripe, it is that - unlike Conan Doyle's formula - this film chooses to put Holmes truly on the defensive until the climax.
Screenplay quibbles aside, this is a very enjoyable movie with filled-out characters that we connect with very quickly and completely, and a plot that keeps us mystified. You'll be glad you saw it.

My son really wanted to see this movie, but I was worried about the Black Magic sequences. I was pleased that Holmes took away all the perception of power from the evil characters by explaining every trick and bribe behind it at the end. I took some time after wards to make sure my son understood the explanations. Overall, we all liked the movie.

Flat, uninspired, joyless. I love Robert Downey Jr. but don't expect an inspired performance here. Difficult to blame him though, the script is dull and lifeless. A journeyman remake that seems singularly obsessed with turning Sherlock Holmes into a UFC champion. Nothing else here. Sadly, the wonderful Robert Downey Jr. is left mumbling incoherently - before as well as after his ceaseless cage fights in merry old England. Jude Law turns in a more interesting performance as a different kind of Dr. Watson - but it's like a nice ditty on a sinking ship. Mr. Richie was just the wrong man to put at the helm - maybe at any helm.

I brought my two nieces (19 and 21) and we all loved this movie. The acting was surpurb and the background scenery was very realistic of an 19th century London. The story was a little hard to follow at the beginning, but as all the loose ends were tied up everything became clear. I would recommend this movie to everyone.

The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is superbly acted. The videography invites the viewer into the film beautifully, and the "montage flashbacks" to illustrate Holmes's brilliant deductions keep you on your toes, trying to follow along and solve the mystery. The film "sags" in a couple of places but overall - it's totally engaging.

This is Sherlock Holmes as you have never seen him.... not your staid, super-intellectual, but a real man, warts and all. Downey is fantastic, and Law is such an interesting choice for the sidekick Watson. The story line's a bit contrived, but go anyway. You will be thoroughly entertained!
