Fun romp...touch predictable if implausible, nevertheless entertaining....Depp holds it all together in more ways than one and by himself earned the fourth star in my review. Jolie has an ornamental role of little substance. The Italians added a bit of spice. It was good enough to bring all these actors to Venice for a laugh but far from the intensity of a Hitchkockian thriller.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Town Keeps Your Attention

The bottom line is an unrealistic cliche...self-exile on a Georgian bayou after turning your back on a life of crime. The premise, that love can be found in the most unlikely of places, even among the victims of your crime, is equally unbelievable. Was it impossible to get some semblance of similarity among the Boston accents or are we to believe that any accent works as long as it isn't traditional ABC tv English? In spite of all this, the movie held my attention, mostly because like many movie goes I want to get away and believe something preposterous is possible.
Movies are not about the actor or director. They should tell a story. When the director and / or actor believe their craft is more important than the story, the movie is invariably a failure. Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. are guilty of this fundamental violation of story telling using the large screen as their medium. I fell asleep. My son fell asleep. Wake us up when you have a story to tell!!!
If you go to this movie expecting to see a Bourne Identity action flick, you'll be disappointed. The marketing does the film an injustice. This is a serious dissertation on the subject of Islam inserted into the format of an action-spy thriller. The message actually undermines the thrill potential of the movie as it takes precedence. One is likely to appreciate the under-stated tone and quiet energy of Don Cheadle. His credibility as a Muslim and even his use of Arabic have a fairly authentic quality to it. This movie will not be a commercial success, but it presents an alternate Islamic perspective and the plot turns will keep you minimally engaged. I recommend it but it's not the high-powered, action-packed thriller.
This was a formulaic blend of personalities and plot elements designed, awkwardly I might add, to rifle a few bucks from our pockets. This is far from ideal movie making and a lot closer to embarrassingly, common trash. This is Hollywood running their rigged card game at our loss. It always adds up to 21 for them. Buying tickets for junk movies like this leaves us, the suckers, holding the bad cards.
