It isn't exactly the Holmes we know from the books, but Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. bring the man to life with their own unique twist. The plot itself is new, but stays true to the tone of the original Mysteries - the mystifying activity of a paranormal antagonist that Holmes must unravel and show for what it truly is. If I have one gripe, it is that - unlike Conan Doyle's formula - this film chooses to put Holmes truly on the defensive until the climax. Screenplay quibbles aside, this is a very enjoyable movie with filled-out characters that we connect with very quickly and completely, and a plot that keeps us mystified. You'll be glad you saw it.
