In a year filled with animated movies, this one stands out. It truly is a movie that is made for both children and adults. Even teens like it. My favorite is the gift-wrapping elf who won't settle for less than perfect. A breath of fresh air in the stale world we currently inhabit. Did you know that the S-1 is loosely based on a real NASA design? Go see it. You will come out happy.
One would think with a stellar cast and the Weinstien backing, this could only be a great movie. However, it fails to connect with the audience in the primary way movies should--it doesn't give us anything new and insightful about the main characters. The story of Marilyn's drug usage and fear of abandonment is well documented. While Michelle does an excellent job mimicking Marilyn, the story remains vague and unappealing. The movie seems to lose it's way several times and even the award-winning actors can't save it. Just a rental to see Michelle's performance.
This Martin Scorsese film had so much potential but ended up just being a pitch for film preservation. I kept waiting for the movie to take off but all we got was "special 3D effects" (snow blowing), repetitious action scenes, and full-blown melodrama. Please! Extraordinary acting but a boring, weak script. And the 3D was totally unnecessary. Save your $15 and rent something better.
Disappointed is the best description here. I was not expecting an over the top comedy like Bridesmaids or Hangover but most of the "jokes" were lame or pathetic. A couple of laughs like the claymation is all that it has to offer. Even the 3D effects seemed strained. I guess the guys needed the money. Wait for the DVD; they are bound to have to give it away to move them.
Uneven writing from two of the best screenwriters out there make this a dull movie with a weak ending. And Brad Pitt's subdued acting doesn't help. A lot of people will end of seeing this movie because of Brad but it is not in the same class as The Social Network or Field of Dreams. The only redeeming part is Jonah's portrail of the numbers guy. [Spoiler!] The movie would have been much bettter if the focus was on the 20-game history-setting winning streak. Instead, it focused on the loser mind-set of the GM (Pitt) and how he turned down the highest salary for a GM and the chance to be the GM of the World Series winning Red Sox. Sad waste of talent and our time.
This as been a year of so-so movies. Therefore, it was a real pleasure to watch a well-written, well-acted film about real life. While based in 1963, the basic theme is still current today. Because of the large cast of great actors, you were sucked into their world in a matter of minutes and it held your attention for the entire 2:17 running time. Such strong women playing it real is such a treat in the world of buxom women in spandex outfits that are all the rage today. A true breath of fresh (yet thought-provoking) air! Enjoy it on the big screen for full-immersion.
First, let me say that I saw this film without reading what it was about. Instead, I just let it unfold. This was the first time in years that I watched a movie this way and it was a wonderful experience--the way movies are meant to be watch (but due to so many bad movies out there, we no longer can that that kind of chance). So if you watch to enjoy the movie experience, stop reading now and go see this movie!
If you are still unsure (slight spoilers ahead) then consider this. This movie is about people and the decisions they make. Sometimes they are good decisions, sometimes bad, but all of them at true at the time we make them. The other side of this movie is about soul mates. Are they real and worth fighting for? (Heck yes!) I also love how the different stories came together at the end (except that they had to remind us of all the steps that got us there, like we hadn't just watch it unfold--minor complaint).
People keep saying they are tired of comic book and video game movies. OK, here is a movie about people and the lives they lead. It is an excellent movie and everyone should see it to make sure they keep making real movies like this. So go! What are you waiting for? <grin>
Two nice stars in a funny but nice film. The bit with his father is a downer in an otherwise upbeat movie. I love flash mobs but the second (and most critical one) was a letdown. So why just 3 stars? Bad sound. I was in an AMC theater and we could hardly hear the dialogue. I even asked them to turn up the sound but it was still hard to hear. Must be the movie itself since this is the first film in over a year that we had trouble hearing. Look forward to the DVD so we can hear what we missed.
Kristen Wiig (Extract) wrote and starred in this female version of Hangover. It has a lot of the teenage gross-out humor yet tries to also show a woman's feelings about this time of change. Lot's of bodily fluids flying everywhere and talk about male members but long boring scenes between. Could have cut 20 minutes and made it much better. I hope her next one is. Looking forward to it but I won't be buying the DVD.
Movies based on Philip K. Dick books (like Bladerunner) are usually dark and dreary so I was surprised by the more enlightened take of this film. I won't give away it's secrets but Matt Damon and Emily Blunt definitely had chemistry here. The chase scenes and the tricks with the doors were very entertaining. A nice change of pace from the heavy horror and comic book flicks dominating the screens. Just go and enjoy it for what it is.
