Loved it. Big, beautiful with a story that holds your attention throughout the 2 and a half plus hours. The scenery, costumes, and characters are stunning and you will need tissues at the end. The story line holds no surprises but it was great to see a good ol' fashion movie on the screen. Go see this movie! This is an old-fashioned romantic swashbuckling movie like you rarely see. Some people are saying it's the Australian Gone With The Wind, and believe me, that's a good thing. Kidman and Jackman sizzle, and Australia is amazingly beautiful (definitely better seen on a grand theater screen than at home). Kidman is as much an action hero as Jackman, which I appreciated (though even when she's dirty and ragged, she looks terrific!). And I don't think most of the world is aware of how long the government's action against Aboriginal children went on (1973) -- nice to have a movie with a cause. I laughed, I cried, I had a great time, and I'm going back with my teenage daughter.

Simply awful. Slow and ponderous, every character is a cliche, every plot element is predictable. The movie is at least 45 minutes too long. The dialogue is silly. There is simply not much good that can be said about this mess. Maybe the portrayal of the aborigine characters, who at least have some depth. Some of the panoramic shots are beautiful, but even the cinematography is heavy handed. Only completely romantic sentimentalists willing to suspend critical faculties should see this movie.

The first 5 minutes or so made me feel like sneaking into another movie playing next door, but very quickly, 'Australia' turned into the spectacular flick we had been hoping for. This is a film worth seeing. You will learn things you didn't know, you will see great acting. There is good and evil. It is just a little too long. I think every director has to leave something out and Luhrmann should have left out about 10-15 minutes. I thought the country wide shots were fantastic but the film wasn't as sharp or colorful as it could have been. I did learn again that kissing Nicole Kidman must be an out of world experience. See this film, just don't take a large drink in with you. A large film for a large audience, young and old. Four Stars.

For me, this was a thoroughly enjoyable film from start to finish despite the long run time. If you're looking for sexual tension, it's there. Good guys, bad guys? Yep. Action? You bet! Although Kidman and Jackman's characters are a bit stereotypical, the setting and story line set this movie apart from most. The main characters' motivations are well conceived and compelling. The emotion is there - not contrived, but seemingly sincere. Every action and reaction is believable. Cast as the mixed-race boy, Nullah, Brandon Walters breaks out with a superb performance. Australia definitely lives up to its hype, and I wouldn't hesitate to see this movie again. It was a feast for the eyes - in more ways than one!

My sixteen year old daughter loved it, and appreciated seeing a rare romantic adventure without contemporary sarcasm. We loved the big scale of it. A little slow in the beginning but once it gets going, it is worth it! The characters were well developed and you can't help but get involved with what develops to them. The scenery is beautiful. Highly recommended.

I was concerned about this maybe being just another epic but Baz Luhrmann added just enough of his quirkiness and visual artistry to make this movie the best I have seen in a very long time. The movie gives a miraculous insight into a country with a rich and diverse history that I admit I did not know much about. The cinematography was breathtaking and the story was very compelling. Not sure when I have cried so much from sadness and laughter. The little boy was amazing as well as adorable. Ok, it has to be said, Hugh Jackman has absolutely earned the title of "Sexiest Man Alive" He makes the already beautiful scenery even more awesome. One last thing...If this does not take the Oscar for Best Picture, there is no justice!

IMHO.. it's NOT epic. it's just big... It's NOT a great movie but it is a good movie. I blame the director. Not enough raw talent. The movie is 2 :45 long and could have been cut down..
The scenery in Australia can be as magnificent as New Zealand views in the LOTR trilogy, but in MANY shots they are using a CGI digital background ?? Why would they do that when the real thing is better? Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman don't disappoint.. there is obvious chemistry although the kisses do NOT look passionate.. I went in thinking it would be a GOOD movie and was not disappointed. Amber went in expecting a GREAT movie and was. It's definitely worth seeing.

i took my 71 year old mother to see and my two kids were in this beautiful land studing abroad.It was the most magical movie ,it took us away from our finiancial troubles .This movie took us on a beautiful adventure to a wonderful country we would never be able to visit in person.It gave you hope in people and love previls all.I would recommend this movie to any one wanting to have something to take you away from your troubles .I plan on seeing movie with my two students when they get home from Australia.Thumbs up on this one.I have'nt been to movies in three years but budgeted for this one! allstarmom06
