I'll be honest. The only reason I was there was to look at Bradley Cooper. He's about the only good thing about this movie (at least for women). How he can be in such a superb movie as "Silver Linings Playbook" and slither back to this "trilogy" is beyond me. The original was hilarious, but sometimes you can take something that was a hit the first time around and wear it out. That's how I feel about the third installment. Nothing terribly original about this movie. Not particularly funny except for a few choice moments. Mostly seen that, heard that. Fell flat for me.
This movie went ON AND ON AND ON... Way too much Sci-Fi for me, and it seemed as if the battles never stopped. My ears are still ringing 24 hours later. Basic Superman story embellished with an overkill of alien garbage, perhaps to appeal to the younger crowd. Have we run out of ways to make movies about this superhero? It would seem so. Not so sure Superman purists will like this one. Cut 30 minutes, lose half of the Sci-Fi stuff, focus more on who Superman is and less on how many things the aliens can destroy, and this movie might make 3.5 stars. Very disappointing.
Coming on the heels of "Jack Reacher," which I really enjoyed, I was curious to see how Cruise would handle Sci Fi. I wasn't disappointed with his performance, but the storyline left me cold. Regardless of genre, a story needs to make sense and the loose ends need to be tied up. For me, that wasn't the case. The first third of the movie moved extremely slow, and despite the special effects, I had a hard time getting hooked. Even when the "mysterious stranger" is rescued and that relationship is revealed, I felt very little chemistry between the actors. I think I could have enjoyed this movie more if I had been in the mood for some mental gymnastics to piece the plot together. If you go, be prepared to complete the "plot puzzle" in order to better enjoy the movie.
I was anxious to see Les Mis, and for the most part I wasn't disappointed. A quick word to those who are not fans of musicals: you probably will find it unbearably long and breathe a sigh of relief when it ends. With that said, the performances of Hathaway and Jackson are incredible. The supporting cast was outstanding. Crowe carried his part, but he lacked the luster of the other performers. Part of this likely had to do with the stoic nature of his character, but I would have liked to see far more intensity out of him. It might have been interesting to have Gerad Butler in this role as his voice in Phantom of the Opera far surpassed Crowe's. I have to admit that I was ready for the movie to end after more than 2.5 hours. At times it seemed as if the story lagged a bit. Still, this adaptation is high on emotion and should please those who are fans of Les Mis. It's just not the movie for those who don't care for musicals.
Pros great story, great actors, great singing, great emotion
The last time I saw Tom Cruise, he was sporting hair extensions, black fingernail polish, and a monkey in tow. Loved his performance in "Rock of Ages," but it was great to see in back in his genre as Jack Reacher. The guy can still act, and his portrayal of Reacher was believable and what I would envision the character to be like. The timing on this movie was unfortunately in light of the Sandy Hook shootings, but only because of the way this movie began. The story moved along quickly with some unexpected twists and turns. The dialogue popped, and the acting (particularly Cruise) was very good. The producers did a good job of keeping the violence down to earn the PG-13 rating. Smart move because it wasn't needed in this film.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great dialogue
Django kept me engaged throughout almost three hours of a myriad of emotions. At first it seemed a little slapstick in a way, then it turned darker after the midpoint. Some scenes in the movie might be very disturbing to some, and there is plenty of bloodshed to the point of "overkill." Still, the story itself was well done, and the acting superb. I really don't know why, but I expected a different type of movie judging from the trailers. Go enjoy it, but be aware that some parts might leave you a little squeamish. Great dialogue, great actors!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great dialogue
I had higher expectations for this movie. Yes, Streisand and Rogen were well cast as mother and son, and there were some laughs along the way, but overall I thought the storyline was weak and predictable. Thankfully, it didn't run long. I enjoyed it to a point, but after awhile, the story no longer interested me and the laughs didn't come as easily. I would recommend it with reservations. Better to rent it than to spend the bucks.
Loved the music and the performances of the "name" actors. They had to have a blast making this movie, and I enjoyed seeing Brand, Baldwin, Zeta-Jones, and Cruise in unconventional roles (OK, not so much Brand). Hough and Boneta were probably the weakest links for me, mostly because of the weak storyline. But who came for the story? It was the music that was the draw. Cruise rocked and looked good doing it. Hard to believe he's pushing 50. I rocked and almost rolled in laughter at some of the scenes. This was just a good time, and yes, I'd recommend it for those who love rock 'n roll!
I went to see this movie based on the reviews I read here. Either I have higher standards in an action movie, or we didn't see the same film. This is pure action, but I found the storyline/plot subpar. The action scenes were well done, but that didn't give me enough to rate this movie above three stars. I would recommend it for those who are solely interested in action without expecting much substance.
The trailers for this movie showed it to be a promising date movie with a twist on the traditional romantic comedy. Unfortunately, the film was nothing more than a bland series of unrelated scenes strung together to fill two hours of pure boredom. I never got into the story because frankly, there wasn't much of one other than the obvious. The pacing was terribly slow, and I thought Blunt and Segel lacked chemistry. I got to the point where I wanted to say, "Well, if you're so unhappy, move on, dude!" because I was about to do so myself - right out the door. Cutting this to 90 minutes might have forced the writers to tighten the story where it might have been bearable. As it was, this movie ran too long and had little to offer. Save your time and money. This one struck out.
