I have been waiting for this film for years. Hard to believe that Rob Marshall missed the mark, especially after "Chicago". This was flat and boring, mainly because Day-Lewis was miscast. As a musical theater and film fan, I am worried that adaptations like this will kill the genre before I get to see some of my favorite shows on the big screen.

Heard the mediocre reviews but decided to see it anyway. Big mistake. Marion Cotillard is charming and terrific, Penelope Cruz is excellent, Kate Hudson delivers a fun performance, and Fergie's showstopper is the highlight of the film. Judi Dench is solid. As for the rest, well . . . Daniel Day Lewis is woefully miscast, and on screen far too much for the audience to gloss over that mistake. Nicole Kidman and the once-glamorous Sophia Loren look like refugees from the Planet of the Plastic Surgeon, and their acting matches their appearance. Worst of all, when the ladies aren't singing and dancing, the film is just plain boring. I thought I'd like it enough, but I didn't. Skip Nine.

We were very disappointed in the overall movie, as were the other movie goer's leaving the theatre. The musical numbers were entertaining, but the rest of the movie, totally boring. Most of the people around me, including myself, had trouble staying awake. Everyone left the show, in complete silence and not smiling. Can an American Audience be expected to sit through 8 1/2? The fact that this film is being marketed as a blockbuster doesn't take away from it's brilliance. Half the audience is frustrated that the film does not have the well-oiled structure of modern "thrill-me" cinema. The other half is grateful that a film inspired by a classic did not attempt to dumb itself down for a modern audience. Filleni's films and characters did not have traditional pace, development, or structure and it would have been offensive not to respect his aesthetic in a piece that was the closest to autobiography for him. Cinematic, filled with pathos, and well-written, this film will probably be misunderstood today and revered in twenty years.

The trailer shows the highlights of the film. The rest is totally flat. You keep waiting for it to explode, get your adrenalin going but it never does. Daniel day Lewis does he best that he can, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Judi Dench. Rob Marshall's just too jazzy. I gave this 3 stars be/c it started out as 5 stars & ended at 1. Such a shame, this movie could've been a masterpiece. The 1st half was amazing. But, even the greatness of Day Lewis can't develop this whiny character, who whines the whole way through the movie, as a typical self-obsessed, self-pitying "artist." His story just does not develop enough. It also felt like the longest movie ever. I think that's what made it so bad. Dench & Fergie = fantastic as are Cotillard & Cruz. Hudson can dance & look like a model, but she still can't act. Kidman is still way overpaid. Long before it ended, I was just waiting for it to be over. The last half is only watchable be/c it's visually stunning, but there is no story left.

I'd been looking forward to this film more than almost any other this holiday season. What a letdown! Almost all the musical numbers felt as if they'd been done, better, in other movies. Daniel Day-Lewis was a collection of tics more than a full-blooded performance. As for the women, several of them were just glorified cameos; only Marion Cotillard truly stood out. Every performance was full out and compared very favorably with both Broadway productions. Each cast member eagerly jumped out of his or her comfort zone. I enjoyed the grand scale provided by using the sound stage as a window on the world. Bravo!

Major thumbs up to Marion Catillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, and Kate Hudson. Although these ladies all had great performances, the story line felt disconnected and lagged during the middle of the movie. Daniel Day-Lewis' singing was weird and and drawn out, although I liked his acting. I thought Nicole Kidman did a poor job in the movie. It was basically a cameo and her performance bored me. I had such high hopes for this movie. I wouldn't recommend this to a friend because if I was bored (and I am a huge musical fan) then they would surely be bored.

Director extraordinaire Rob Marshall does it again with a dazzling entertainment full of glorious costumes, musical numbers and terrific performances. Daniel Day-Lewis surprisingly makes a perfect Italian, Fergie's "Be Italian" is a standout, Kate Hudson really shines with a fun song "Cinema Italiano". It's easy to see why Marion Cotillaird and Penelope Cruz have been nominated for Golden Globes. The storyline of a genius director whose life is falling apart (problems with his wife and mistress, no inspiration for his new film) is hardly new, but "Nine" makes it fresh with style to burn and a dream cast. I thought this movie was brilliant! Daniel plays the quintessential Italian in a midlife crisis. He captures the true Italian man, as well as the accent!! Regardless of the fact that I love every actor in this film and found some of the numbers wonderful, this was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The star power couldn't overcome the lack of story. The lead character was very unlikeable and I just didn't find any redeeming qualities in him. I'm not a big fan of musicals but I did love Chicago (stage and film) as well as Moulin Rouge and La Boheme(film), and Chorus Line. The songs seemed to be used every time an emotion was being illustrated. By the time Nicole Kidman's character arrived on the scene I just didn't buy that her character would ever be remotely interested in the director.

With Fellini as a model, this film had all the potential in the world. Instead it had me checking my watch to see when it would end. Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard were in brilliant form, and yes, everyone had a good singing voice. If you listened to songs just for the sound, this would be fine, but the lyrics were atrocious. Nearly every song mentioned Day-Lewis' character. Not once. Not twice. As the chorus. I didn't feel like I was caught up in a man's fantasies so much as watching a bad stage production get in the way of a good film.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

It felt like a direct ripoff of "All That Jazz." SImilar plot, similar star, similar dance numbers. I was disappointed until Fergie's big number, "Be Italian," which stole the show. Most of the numbers after this were excellent, too. If you stick it out to the second halp, you may like it.

Cast does well, direction a little disjointed, Daniel Day Lewis does a fine job, Kate Hudson surprisingly good - where did her song come from? -- and Penelope Cruz wonderful, but the best is Marion Cotillard.

This movie boasts a star-studded cast with a great musical score. I had the pleasure of seeing it during the World Premiere of the film and I was thoroughly entertained. It is a humorous account of an Italian movie producer (Lewis) and the women in his complicated life, including, but not limited to, his Mother (Loren), his wife (Cotillard), his mistress and a cast of many others. I never laughed so hard in my life! It is a light-hearted musical comedy with lavish sets and costumes. Go and enjoy and remember that it's great to be Italian! :-)
