Can an American Audience be expected to sit through 8 1/2? The fact that this film is being marketed as a blockbuster doesn't take away from it's brilliance. Half the audience is frustrated that the film does not have the well-oiled structure of modern "thrill-me" cinema. The other half is grateful that a film inspired by a classic did not attempt to dumb itself down for a modern audience. Filleni's films and characters did not have traditional pace, development, or structure and it would have been offensive not to respect his aesthetic in a piece that was the closest to autobiography for him. Cinematic, filled with pathos, and well-written, this film will probably be misunderstood today and revered in twenty years.
