A show case for some fun and spectacular staging. Great performances from Fergie, Marion, Kate, and Judi, OK performance from Sophia and and Penelope. Nicole plays the usual flat femme fatale. (Reminds me as always as the chick in Who Shot Roger Rabbit)
Daniel DL does a great job playing the tortured Guido, you just don't care.
For the reviewer who thinks no one gets his "pain" and the creative block, Oh, we get it!!! We just don't care! Disappointing.
Some great nostalgic scenes, the sports car rounding the cliffs, the colors, the feel of the scene . . . you know exactly what they are portraying, it just doesn't matter.

Having seen Nine on stage with Antonio Banderas I was really looking forward to this film. But where Banderas was such a charmer that you couldn't help but fall under his spell, Day- Lewis is a self absorbed narcissus who is self destructing. The musical numbers were well staged and performed but it's hard to care about the plot when you dislike the primary characture.

Beautiful costumes, hair and make-up, great production design, and gorgeous cinematography are all of what make this film entertaining. But unfortunately when you go to see a musical you expect really good music and I found barely any of the songs to be memorable or interesting.
Yes, there are some decent and well delivered lines from the all-star cast but in the end we have a disjointed story and few sympathetic characters. As a filmmaker I appreciated the references to Fellini but I'd rather watch 8 1/2 instead since that is where most of the story is lifted.
Conclusion: I would recommend this as a rental for those whole love cinematography, costumes, etc... or who want to see some hot dancing from Penelope Cruz.

I was so looking forward to this given how blown away I was by Rob Marshall's handling of Chicago. But Nine just doesn't have a good enough story to tie all the big production numbers together. Which, were absolutely fantastic! Kate, Marion, Fergie and Penelope did phenomenal jobs and the numbers were staged and photographed in an exciting way. Too bad the rest of the movie couldn't maintain the same standards. The dance numbers are worth seeing .. just don't expect much in between.

Reading the reviews here explains why more Broadway shows don't make the big screen. "Nine" carries a message that apparently nearly all reviewers (including good ones) totally missed. As Guido becomes bogged down in his rhetorically debauched adult life and looses his creativity he flashes back over his childhood and the women in his life that helped inspire his creativity. Too caught up in the artificial ritual of his adult life he is unable to create his next masterpiece. Only when he realizes that the little kid hanging around in the recesses of his mind needs to get out and play again, does his creativity return. Ta-Da!! How did everyone miss this???

This movie was incredibly disappointing and NOT worth the entrance price. Should have just gone to see Sherlock Holmes. With so much star power in Nine, I expected to at least be entertained, and instead I was almost put to sleep. The story is boring, the main character, Guido, is a self-indulgent, whiny, selfish, shallow jerk who is entirely unsympathetic. In fact, not a single character in the movie did I end up caring what happened to them. It got to the point where I kept mumbling "please be over, please be over, please be over". Not even worth renting for a dollar at a Red Box. SKIP IT.

Really awful movie! I slept through most of it and would have left except I was with someone. I LOVE DDD (Daniel Day Lewis) but this was not his usual stellar work. Marion Cotillard's performance was amazing and the only bright spot in this otherwise unforgettable movie. The movie felt like a bad MTV video with a really bad script and choppy editing. Don't waste your $$$ on this piece of garbage.

I am a HUGE fan of every single one of the actors in this film. I also love musicals. The plot was horrible and choppy. It was pointless to have Nicole Kidman in the movie. The focus was on the big stars instead of the musical itself. I was expecting a fair comparison to the Chicago musical but I was sorely mistaken.

Daniel Day-Lewis really rocked his part, although underdeveloped, applauds. Camera angles were interesting, love the fade in/out effect, brilliant use of black/white/color in filming. Kate beautiful dancing dazzler. Wow to sizzling sexy Penelope. Nicole just average, no real acting skills. Marion stunning, delivered message, surprisingly strong yet soft and demur, lovable. Fergie scary. Sophie OK. The set interesting. Expected more plot, less music. How ironic.....a guy who can't think of a movie, turns his life struggle with mom/wife/mistress/muse...into a movie. I say, "still ain't got a movie" !

As a Broadway show the original Nine was fair, at best. The movie is actually better than the original Broadway production. That being said, if you want to see a Broadway show reoriented for film then you will enjoy this. The musical numbers range from fair to excellent with some nice staging at times. But if you are looking for a movie that has music in it, then this will disappoint you. Bottom line: a very good show for Broadway fans but a fair to mediocre production for movie fans.

I didn't see 8 1/2. I don't know a whole lot about Fellini. Thus, I enjoyed the movie for itself. I agree with many other reviewers that the parts could have been fleshed out more. But, I was totally satisfied with the musical productions and the acting. To me the story was about the selfishness of art. It robs the artist's loved ones and it robs the artist's soul in order to create. Even in redemption, the artist is its prisoner. This is a heady message, so Nine is not a piece of fluff, like Mama Mia. It is disturbing and the music is sometimes relief from the weight of it. I recommend this film and I'm very glad I saw it.

If you think you're going to watch a movie with some music in it, stay home or pick something else. This is a straight up musical. Along the lines of Moulin Rouge and Chicago. Beautifully shot. Big musical numbers. Stacy Ferguson (Fergie) steals this movie. The acting is great. The singing impressive. If you are going to watch a movie however, you will be disappointed. Lady sitting next to me said, "Well that was disappointing" as soon as the credits rolled. There is no narration to "help you" with the story. The music is the running narrative. So if you don't like that sort of thing, go see Sherlock Holmes.

I liked the movie and did recommend it to several friends. My husband was really disappointed. Ms. Cotillard was the only character who had any soul or believability. Kidman was completely disconnected delivering her usual self-absorbed performance. Daniel Day-Lewis is a genius but was too narcissistic and left me just not caring what happened to him - or his stupid movie. Penelope was sizzling hot and Kate was fun to watch. Fergie was great!! I expected more from the story, even the musical numbers were a bit of a let down. Much more commercial than I expected but I wanted to like it so I did!!

I anticipated a 10 of Nine but can only give it a 2.. Fergie is a definite enchantress. Kate Hudson's performance was certainly lively and that song is certainly catchy. Ms. Cotillard is a definite screen presence giving the audience another passionate emphatic performance. Of Ms. Dench, you just simply run out of words to describe the actor's talent. However, the rest of the cast is forgettable and with all that star power, one would expect at least one dazzling, memorable collaborative effort.

While my husband and I enjoy musicals, there was actually too much music in this one-not enough development of character. Daniel Day Lewis was, as always, fantastic-but, while surmising his conflict with Mothe/rwhore relationships, it was never explained why this conflict occured. Sophia Loren was stunning in her older age, Penelope Cruz didn't look too good. Fergie sang beautifully, Kate Hudson looked so much like her Mom it was distracting. Judy Dentch looked great and was the best actor of the group.

Daniel Day Lewis, the classic "method" actor, steps into the role of Guido with a lot of energy, but lacking focus. We meet his charachter, a lusty Italian movie director, in the midst of a psychological crisis. Unable to deliver the movie which could be his comeback and seeking inspiration, he reminices and romances a variety of women, each getting her musical moment. Surprisingly, the most impressive number comes from Kate Hudson in a 60's go-go uptempo, "Cinema Italiano". She handles the dance moves with ease, belts like a pro and delivers her trademark spunk. Less impresive is Nicole Kidman, in a small, uninspired "muse" role. Penelope Cruz, playing Guiudo's mistress, although stunningly beautiful, comes off more sleazy than sexy.

I loved practically everything about this movie,
Is entertaining, has beautiful pictures and awesome casting, is seductive and the scores are great! It reflect a true reality of a business career and and industry and the personal battles of life. Specially if you are a sensual kinda person, love music, beauty and different cultures this movie is for you. The technical floss that the criticals may point become minimum to imperceptible comparing with the whole movie which has the power to involve you in a very pleasing atmosphere almost like in a hot dream.

Though the movie was reminiscent of "ALL THAT JAZZ" IN THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER WAS REVIEWING HIS LIFE -- HE WAS IN THIS NOT AT ALL ON HIS DEATH BED -- THE PRODUCTION NUMBERS WERE SPECTACULAR; DANIEL DAY LEWIS WAS BRILLIANT AS WAS JUDI DENCH. The two long numbers in the film from Fergie and Kate Hudson are fantastic, fun and sexy. THe rest of the film, while beautifully shot, is lame. Marion Cotillard is stunningly beautiful, but only sparingly and depressingly used in Nine. Penelope Cruz starts off as funny, and witty and then gets molded into a sad, pathetic character.
DanielDay Lewis was wrong for this role, too heavy-handed, and instead of liking the bad-boy you just end up...well, not liking him.
Nicole Kidman only shines when you realize how sad she is at the end of her time on screen, nothing explained or even gleaned, just sad.

We totally enjoyed Rob Marshall's "Chicago" but this mess is not anything like that. It is only loosely based on the Tony award winning Broadway play. Only here, instead of a 40 year old director with writer's block whose loss of the women in his life inspire him (play), you have a 50 year old director just losing women. The only good parts are Fergie's and Kate Hudson's numbers. The rest is dull as cardboard. Not even a good rental. Go see Up In The Air again.

I love this musical so was excited to see the movie. However the story went nowhere and it was 2 hours of music videos held together by a weak script. The new songs were not good and the direction was obvious. Daniel Day Lewis did a good job of portraying a director in mid-life crisis but ultimately who cares. Those beautiful songs were butchered by actresses who cannot sing. Enough of the big names, let's see some talent up there.

Great Cast. Very dissappointed in the movie as a whole. Parts were great. Most of the movie is cumbersome with Guido's angst: too much. The movie's sub plot is the creation of a movie without a solid plot/script... that's what I felt like I was watching... a movie struggling for direction ... Many people walked out...
