Sigourney's character could have been a candy bar addict or addicted to nuts, for that matter. The most dishonest and blaringly UNNECESSARY and pandering thing in this exquisite film experience was the stupid cigarettes.
I didn't see 8 1/2. I don't know a whole lot about Fellini. Thus, I enjoyed the movie for itself. I agree with many other reviewers that the parts could have been fleshed out more. But, I was totally satisfied with the musical productions and the acting. To me the story was about the selfishness of art. It robs the artist's loved ones and it robs the artist's soul in order to create. Even in redemption, the artist is its prisoner. This is a heady message, so Nine is not a piece of fluff, like Mama Mia. It is disturbing and the music is sometimes relief from the weight of it. I recommend this film and I'm very glad I saw it.
