No matter whether you like the movie or not,you have to admit it stayed true to form.There is no way on earth they could do the driving stunts from the original cartoon in real life. The physics of it alone are impossible. So if you came to see a "Days of Thunder" type movie,you wasted your time. But if you came to see "Speed Racer" in the flesh,you made a worthwhile trip.Don't look for hidden meanings or subplots in this movie,just enjoy a trip down nostalgia boulevard and sit back because Speed's got the wheel.

The key to enjoying this movie is just knowing what to expect when you enter the theatre. Don't forget that the film is based on an anime, and so, all aspects of it are going to be a tribute to the show that came before it. Yes, the graphics are going to be flashy and the music and plot are fast-pased. No, the script isn't going to win an oscar for best adapted screenplay, but it has it's moments, and it fits the style that the movie fits into. Every character gets his/her own speech, which to some may be a little superfluous but let's not forget, this is a *Japanese* story here. (If you've seen other Japanese or most Asian movies, you know that monologues are always prominent from every member of the cast.) Actually, although I was dazzled by the onslaught of fantastically colourful graphics, it must be said that the script had high points as well. In one part, where Speed gives the cheesiest speech you've ever heard about 'why he enjoys racing' to the leader of the big, nasty, corporate company who's trying to take over speed's family's business, I thought the script had failed me. But then, Royalton, (the corupt corporate man previously mentioned), outrigth laughs at him, and takes Speed's speech and stomps all over it with a nasty monologue of his own. He delivered it so well, and shot Speed down so hard, that it makes Speed's cheesy speech seem necessary in order to provoke such a stupendiously evil and well-written retort by Royalton. Truth be told, the thing I liked best about the movie was the fact that the script allowed you to choose whether to take it seriously or not. If you want to watch Rex and Speed in the car and just think, "Wow, that looks awesome," then you can. But if you want to look more closely and listen, you can hear Rex say the line, "Stop steering, and start driving." He's talking about cars, but he's also speaking to the movie's point about paying attention to what's going on around you and taking action, much like Speed does when he's up against impossible odds. Just remember, this movie is a cute and somewhat basic story about hope for the underdog, told in a remarkably entertaining way. Don't expect insanely thought out plots like Usual Suspects or drama like in Lord of the Rings... Just expect to have a good time with it, as its obvious the filmakers did.

This movie was everything a fan of the 1966 cartoon series could expect, and more. It remained faithful (nearly) to the original Speed Racer cartoons. All of the primary characters were there; signature, campy behaviors and mannerisms were interpreted and played as closely as possible by their human counterparts. The impossible automobile tricks, flips and jumps, as well as gansters, spies, assassins and corporate espionage were all part of the original series. If you were never a fan of the Speed Racer cartoons, you will not likely be impressed with the movie for its own sake. You need to have known the cartoon series to understand what the Wachowski's are trying to do. I also liked the way the Wachowski's brothers managed to include a successful homage to the original Japanese version "Go Mifune," as well as introducing some history and background to the story. If I were to have anything negative to say about the movie it would be this; 1) the little bit of profanity was uneccessary, as was Spridle's one-finger salute; 2) the blazing fast color renditions of the pinball-like racing was a little too fast (lots of sensory input).

I know this movie has gotten a lot of negative reviews (some points I agree with, like too much dialogue in the beginning), but I have to say my kids and I really enjoyed this film. I think critics overthink things too much. I don't know why people critique these summer movies like they're supposed to have the depth and significance of Schindler's List. It's just a fun, summer movie - relax, enjoy, suspend disbelief for awhile. It is visually stunning. The Wachowski's have created never before seen effects which I think are worth seeing. It has a good moral to the story. It's a good family movie. And, though, kids may get a little antsy during the heavy dialogue in the beginning, they are rewarded with high energy, and even comedic, scenes in the latter half. My kids left the theater very excited, and LOVED the chimp!!! I would encourage any family looking to take their children to a good, wholesome movie to go see this film. It's also fun for the car guy, Speed Racer fanboy, or anyone into action movies with cool, new effects.

I took my 4 year old daughter to see Speed Racer and thought it would be a good kids movie. I was sooooo wrong. Speed Racer has acting on par with CBS's CSI Miami. The movie failed to grab my interest or attention after 30 minutes in the theater. There was absolutely NO continuity or sense that the movie was going anywhere. The timeline was almost impossible to follow with scenes in the future, then in the past then farther in the future, back to the??? when is it now? There was one? who's sister? Are you confused? Yeah, so was I. I was also upset enough about the movie to leave with my little girl in-tow and vowed to tell everyone I know, and anyone else who will listen about the worst moovie I have EVER seen. We left after just about 40 minutes of in-action and poor acting. I will NEVER pay to see another movie with Susan Serandon and John Goodman. What a TOTAL piece of GARBAGE. The review about being in a pinball machine? What the heck is that and how long before the movie did you take the acid and how much of the 9th grade did you complete? If anyone reading this has more than a sixth grade education, do yourself a favor and just stay home dust off your sun visors or clean out the cat box...either will be far more rewarding and entertaining than the piece of CRAPOLA called Speed Racer! BOOOOOO HISSSSSSSS. Awful movie, DO NOT PAY TO SEE IT, DO NOT WATCH IT ON CABLE OR DVD, IF A FRIEND TRIES TO GET YOU TO WATCH IT...THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. Okay, you get the point!

I had no expectations going into this movie as we went to it mostly for the kids. I found myself extreemly impressed with the animation and action scenes. The family values were great and it was a wonderful movie. I would and have recommended it to everyone! Go Speed!

At first I thought I was in a pinball machine with all the lights an stuff. As the picture got going I found myself rooting and almost yelling for the MACH 5 and Speed. This was a great picture and it stayed true to the Speed racer that I grew up with, I will have to go and see this again because of all the action. Go Speed racer go speed racer goooooo.........

AT 1st i was really iffy about this movie, It looked a little too surrealistic for Speed Racer, The 1st Japanimation that hooked me as a kid. but i felt the filmmakers stayed true to the feel of the old cartoon, while at the same time modernizing it with surrealistic, Frank Miller colors and film texture, as well as Matrix type-action scenes. I was content with the cast they choose and A Realistic, feasible plot. Cheers to Speed Racer, it made feel like a kid again on Saturday morning.

AWESOME!!! Thanks to the directors, producers and everyone involved in this movie. It helped me relive my childhood. I have all 52 original episodes of Speed Racer on Collector's Discs and VHS, and this movie could not have done any better on keeping true to the story.
They amazingly brought these anime characters to life on the big screen. John Goodman as Pops Racer was phenomenal. His facial expressions and grunts were almost identical to the anime Pops. Racer X's motions and voice were an exact real life duplicate of the anime character. Spridle and Chim Chim were hilarious. My 5 year old boy was in hysterics at their antics.
Speed, Trixie and Mom were all OK, although I think that they could have gone with a younger actress for the Mom. Also, they really could have done without the swearing and finger. It added nothing to the movie.
This movie is kind of like the Three Stooges. People either love them, or hate them. For most females, this movie will do nothing. For most men, they will think it's cool, especially if they have kids.
For any true Speed Racer fan, though, you will probably end up having goose pimples and be close to tears as I was. To be able to enjoy this with my son and pass along something that was so special to me in my childhood is truly a blessing. Thanks again for giving me a truly moving movie experience.
Forget what the critics are saying, Go and See Speed! It's a fun movie.

I think the only saving grace for this movie was from Ricci. If you like watching cars race for a very long time, as in the majority of the way too long movie, you'll love it. The story could have been told in 1 hour and 30 minutes instead of the 2 hours and 15 minutes. It was boring. I thought the pod racing in Star Wars 1 was bad. I was wrong. This movie beats the boring factor and endless repetitiveness of Star Wars's 1 pod race. If you really want to see it then wait for the DVD so you can fast foward through the racing bits. Then you may enjoy it more.

I can't imagine what all the complaining is about. It must be coming from the totally unimaginative audience. If your looking for a drama or a comedy you went to the wrong movie. Its a fast action futuristic car racing movie. Its unrealistic in its racing and crashes. Its supposed to be.
This movie was excellent and fun and worth going to. It is definitely going to be better on the big screen than on your tv - so if you think you ever want to see it - see it now in theaters.
I took my kids (ages 7 & 9) to see this movie this weekend and I/we loved it. Really - I took myself to it and my kids came along as an excuse for me to go to it. I remember watching all the cartoon episodes when I was a kid and thought this more than lived up to the expectations and hype.
I thought it was very well done. It flowed well from start to finish and I thought it had a very attractive look and feel for kids (old and young) - lots of bright colors and fast action car racing. Lots of crashes of unrealistic intensity. It was very fun. I also felt that they left the door open to sequels - but it does not sound like they will based on the theater results. Thats too bad.
I guess I am not surprised the critics panned it - I usually find critics have no clue when it comes to what makes a good movie. But I was surprised that it did so poorly in the theaters. Perhaps just because Iron Man was its competition.
Emile Hirsch was good as Speed - not outstanding but not lame either. Ariel Winter I think was perfect for the role. She has an almost Anime look to her anyway that she almost seems like she came out of a comic book into the movie. I thought the rest of the characters were also good.
My only negative - not a big deal but they use the 3 letter A word 4 or 5 times. A little much considering the audience had kids as young as 4/5 in there. I think I very briefly may have heard the S word, but it happened so fast I am not sure.
While I am not saying that I think this was an epic movie - I do think this was a very fun movie worth going to see. I would give it 4.5 stars out of 5. A .5 point off for the swearing. Can't give it half point though so I bumped it back up to a 5. The 5 is not for being the best movie of all time - but for being a great/fun movie that met and exceeded my expectations.
All in all I would highly recommend it.
Oh - I forgot - my wife came too - she said it was "ok" not her type of movie - which I knew that going in.

Meteoro que traducida al Ingles "Speed Racer", es una muy buena pelicula con bastante accion y escenas chuscas. A pesar de que la mayoria de la pelicula fue filmada en estudio, muestra mucha realidad. Las carreras en momentos hacen que uno contenga la respiracion y provoca mucha emocion con los efectos especiales y sonido. Meteoro tal ves no ses la pelicula favorita de el verano, pero si divierte y vale la hida al cine.

This up to date version still brought me back to my childhood!!!! My whole family enjoyed the entire movie and I have a 12 yr old and 18 yr old!!!!

This movie was so boring. I must've looked at my watch at least 10 times. And I would've had no problem getting up to use the restroom, if only I needed to go. The characters aren't exactly attractive or appealing to stare at for 2 hours 15 minutes. The story was boring and almost predictable, somewhat like a children's picture book. Unlike most movies, I was not waiting for the ending, because it felt like the movie was only going on and on to fill in the 2 hours and 15 minutes it was suppose to run. Too bad I was bored that day, and chose to sit through the whole thing instead of leaving and getting a refund on my ticket. Stupid movie.

I am so surprised to see the great reviews on here from a family perspective.... Not that it's not appropriate for family viewing, but as a parent, even with the history of the original Speed Racer, I thought this fit the stupid and boring category. It was OK for about 30 minutes, and then all intrigue was over and it became goofy while attempting action/adventure. My kids and their friends stayed but didn't spend any time raving when we left. Repetitive and repetitive and, wait, did I say repetitive? Yawn and wish I had my money back to go to the movie in the next theater over.... Everyone is entitled to her opinion, after all.

I had a little trepedation when I entered the movie theater with my six and nine yr old it had been many decades since i watched the cartoon and i didn't no if the movie was going to be targeted entirely for a younger demographic but i was pleasently surprise even though there was a heavy dose of computer animation and special effects the movie was still character driven and had a good script and plot the acting was very believable and credible the family and I enjoyed it thoroughly

The whole family enjoyed this movie ages 6, 10, 17, 33, 36. Great special effects good acting and plenty of laughs. Not many movies get me on the edge of my seat and even though I was pretty sure of the out come I was on the edge of my seat. Definitely entertaining and worth the price of admission.

My husband and I were more enthralled with the movie than our son, because the movie brought back a lot of nostalgia from the cartoon show. It stayed pretty true to the original and they did a good job on portraying those over the top races on the big screen. It dragged a little in parts, but overall a great family flick. Little violent in parts for younger kids, but fun.
