*Spoilers below* ... I write this as an old Trekkie. The new movie is action-packed, interesting, has some character moments, and the special effects are great. I can handle the "alternate reality" as I have renamed the movie in my title above. I cannot handle the constant lens flares, the constantly moving camera, and the inconsistent look of the Enterprise interiors, with the engine room really being a brewery in real life, and the rest being an Apple store. I have followed its development, and understand what JJ was going for. I do think it needed to allow more time for the audience to "catch its breath" during the course of the movie. I was worn out, it was so frenetic. I highly recommend reading the prequel comics to get the backstory.

I grew up watching Star Trek or "Spock" as my mother used to call it. Everyday at 5pm on the local channels we would catch the newest episode. And this was an awesome adaptation of the series. It gave insight into the characters' personalities and why they did things a certain way. Graphics were good. Dialog was excellent. Even the cameos were used to explain the ties between past and future. Nothing cheesy here. Great, great job!

This movie was one of the best I've seen - great special effects, great story, great characters. If you're even a casual fan of the original show, you will really appreciate the personality traits shown in the "earlier versions" of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Scottie. And, if you haven't even seen any Star Trek shows before (hard to believe, but might be possible), you'll still think it's a great story and has great characters. I have to say that I was a little skeptical going in (and aside from Spock, thought the Next Generation crew was superior), but was totally won over in the early minutes. One of the VERY FEW movies that I would actually entertain the thought of paying to see again in the theater.

I went to see this film with an open mind (I grew up on Star Trek). I have to say that it is well worth all of the critical praise as well as fan praise. A great movie! You don't need to love Trek to enjoy and follow this movie ... and if you do know Trek then you will like it all the more. The cast is great - their interrpretation of the characters were their own while still remaining true (especially Bones). Great story, great cast, great effects, Star Trek must have 9 lives (plus) becuase this franchise was just born all over again.

This was Great! It had it all...Action, Sexy, but best of all they added humor! Star Trek Next Gen. was fun to watch, and always interesting, but Not laugh out loud. This movie managed to capture the cool of sci-fi, and add in the funny! Really great stuff!

Besides all the cool cgi, the story was engaging from the start. The ensemble cast did a great job of showing us why the Enterprise crew is so solid. Back story and new "altered present" laid a foundation for this beloved franchise to give us some awesome (no yawns!) screen experiences in this millennium.

Out of all the Star trek movies, this ranks right up there with Wrath of Kahn as one of my all time favorite Trek movies. One thing I found out however is that no birth is without pain and older audience members will have some mixed emotions on the style and pace of the movie. Overall though I feel that Paramount has pulled it off in rebooting the franchise. I think Gene would also approve of the plots message and relevance to today’s audience.

I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn't really interested in watching this movie, but a friend convinced me to go and I really loved it. If you ever watched the old Star Trek, you can definitely appreciate the similarities. If not, it is a good introduction to all of it!

I usually agree with Ebert when it comes to movie reviews..until now. You don't need to be a trekkie or even a cosmos movie-watcher to understand that as a stand alone movie, this reaches all levels and surpasses each. CGI and all the battles are definitely outstanding - enough to get anyone that enjoys that type of thing excited.

I don't usually go to movies with high expectations. I just go to be entertained. But Star Trek has always been a big part of my life. I used to go with my dad every Xmas to see them open. But when the nixed it this year to push it for summer release, my expectations grew. They had better deliver if they were going to take away my tradition I had with my dad. I live out of town and only see him every so often and this Xmas was going to it.
Well I didn't get to see it with dad, but it blew me away. It was amazing. It was done right, it makes sense, and it doesn't ruin all the other Star Treks at all. Nice work team.

This is not Star Trek. It's a Western / Mission Impossible in space.
The essence of Star Trek is science fiction concepts. "New Life, New Civilizations" esoteric phenomena or philosophical ideas from science and technology. Those ideas are the fulcrum of any Star Trek. Personal conflict or explosions (literal and metaphorical) happen but are a result of the situation surrounding the sci-fi idea.
The science here is peripheral, blatantly wrong, and intellectually insulting. For example the notion of a supernova being able to destroy the galaxy (did they mean to say solar system?)
That aside, it’s an OK movie after you're past the unsituated ultra explosion chaos intro and the flying ninja roundhouse kicks of Mr. Sulu .

Outstanding. A great refresh and reboot of what had become a very tired franchise. Hard core trekkies may complain about changes but this will bring Star Trek to an entirely new generation.

I loved the movie no complaints. I see some are not liking the movie because they changed the events and timeline but so WHAT! Now we can have more Star Trek movies with fresh new ideas and new characters!!!! I am a trek fan and loved the new idea, acting and the actors took care to study their older self and helped make it more enjoyable.

My husband and I took our 11 year old Grandson to the latest Star Trek, and we all liked it. Afterwards we went for Ice Cream and discussed our best new actors for this movie. The "new" Spoke was very excellent, as was the "new" Checkov, and the engineer Scott was right on. We are still deciding how well we like the "new" Kirk," but overall he is liked. The "new" Ohora had too little dialogue, and the role was too old school model feminist to be believable. The actress was good and deserved better treatment as an equal member of the Star Trek crew. Overall, we can not wait for the next installment.

My family saw this movie together and we were completely happy with it! It explains everything you need to know about how the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise met, and it's a perfect intro to new Star Trek movies.

If you've never seen a Trek film before, don't miss this one. If you're a die hard Star Trek fan, though this is a rebirth of sorts it is handled with due care and respect for the original. A different history is unfolding, but it's given a breath of fresh air to the story, and provides a whole new generation with the characters we all love. Well Done! See it in IMAX if you can!

I'm a hard core Trekker. The movie changed EVERYTHING about Star Trek. Had I NEVER seen any Star Trek I would have loved the movie. The special effects were amazing. The script was well written. The characters were loveable or hatable as the case may be. However, if you're an old time Trekker like me - well the movie just isn't for you. They actually changed the entire universe. For God's sake they killed Amanda and destroyed the planet Vulcan. They killed Kirk's father just when he was born. NO! So my advice, if you are an old time Trekker like me - don't go see it.
If you want something interesting to watch and don't care that they created an alternate timeline - well go see it and enjoy it for what it is.

I must say it was really, really good! Although I'm familiar with the original Star Trek I've never followed it but my hubby wanted to see it badly so I accommodated! I'm glad I did and will probably see future ones as well. Definitely worth it!
