This production is fabulous! If you missed the first broadcast, buy tickets now for the encore. If the encore sells out, buy a flight to NY and see it in person. As a musician who has played in the orchestra for many operas including Carmen (twice) this is the finest cast, staging, everything I have ever witnessed. I am completely enchanted by Elina (Carmen)!

It is one of the sexiest version of Carmen, second only to the (2003) Spanish movie version with Paz Vega in the key role. In the current version the music and singing is outstanding, almost movie quality. The choreography too, however the staging is somewhat bizarre. Why do the cigar factory workers emerge from a whole in the ground? Why ruins for the soldiers quarters? Otherwise the customs are close to real for the chosen period, Seville in the 20's, as are those of the bullfighters and "cuadrilla".

The main lead for Eascamillo, Mariusz Kwiecien, having fell suddenly sick , he was replaced by Teddy Tahu Rhodes (I am not sure of the name).
He was magnificent and we will certainly hear more about him in the years to come.

I honestly didn't know what to expect; I hadn't been to an opera in years and the last time I went I was probably too young to appreciate it. This was an experience that was amazing and the HD quality brought you into the opera in a way that even being there couldn't. I would highly recommend this to anyone; especially those who have any preconceived notions of what opera is. Truly incredible!!

Only quibble would be in Act 4 - parade of participants in the bullring - much too close to see the costumes and people. Too many in too close proximity to really enjoy the variety. Secondly, the "fill in" for the torreodor was too timid and lacked stage presence and machismo. Excellent voice and perfedt physique, however. Carmen and Don Jose more than made up for these shortcomings.
We took a first time opera observer with us and she was totally enamored with the opera. What a great way to see opera. Please, keep showing them.

This was the best Carmen I have ever seen. From beginning to end, it was absolutely extraordinary. Filled with passion, extreme sensuality combined with the vulnerability of love, and the deep need for freedom resulting in conflict drives this story of life.
Authentic acting, singing talent brought to a modern and relevant level of opera. Worth the trip to Foxboro.
Watching the behind the scenes set up from the crew during intermissions was a great way to be a part of it as though we were being let in on all the secret underpinnings, and it did not distract at all from what would come next. And of course the power of the libretto and music. Relevant and powerful.
This was the best. I haven't stopped talking about it.

The Metropolitan Opera's production of the popular _Carmen_, starts with flawlessly performed music and singing at its foundation. The Richard Ayres version is gritty in its sensuality and rich in "stage business" to make it the sexiest _Carmen_ with the only competition, Theatre de la Jeune Lune's, with Jennifer Baldwin as the most vulnerable and tender Micaela.
Alina Garanca has a riveting stage presence, a full voice that doesn't fail her even when she's being carried by gypsies or is tumbling with turned-on don José, sung and acted beautifully by Roberto Alagna.
These broadcasts are wonderful and bring opera to us for a mere $20 instead of $200 and more.

This production is THRILLING! I doubt there'll be a better CARMEN in our lifetimes - The Met's HD broadcasts are always wonderful to watch, but this one is a standout. Loved the sets, costumes, conducting, dancing, and the gorgeous, passionate cast. And for an extra treat, the scheduled Escamillo fell ill and was replaced on short notice by one of my favorite opera stars - the charming and dashing Teddy Tahu Rhodes - Now there's a Toreador!

WOW! My first experience with the Metropolitan productions. Sets the bar for others very high. One of the finest opera productions I have ever witnessed. The cast was stellar with more dramatic acting than I have encountered in past operas. The interviews and views of stage crew were educational and well done. Elina Aranca's interpretation of the gypsy was smolderingly incredible...her voice terrific, her acting ability equally so. Alagna, too, played Don Jose as the weak and ultimately deranged lover to a "T." I didn't appreciate "Carmen" when I first saw it with Domingo as I could never quite believe Domingo could be such a sap. Staging, direction, costuming, lighting, the redoubtable chorus...all impressive. Hurrah for the young conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, too. A must-see!

Wow! Elina Garanca can sing, ACT! and even dance! Really, a successful "Carmen" depends almost entirely on the person playing the role of Carmen. Elina Garanca is sexy, sings beautifully, is always in character addressing her taunts and seductiveness to the men, and she even joins the other gypsies when they dance. Roberto Alagna is the object of her taunting seductiveness, and he matches her for great singing and acting. Whether you've ever seen Carmen before, or were just considering seeing it, this if one fantastic performance that you will remember.
