Garanca as Carmen is physically arresting & vocally gorgeous if not as commanding in the most dramatic parts of Acts 3 & 4. A wonderful actress who can do anything!
Alagna is theatrically convincing & intense as Don Jose, but with flat singing during the duet with Micaela, then a drastic improvisation during the Flower Song.
Tahu Rhodes' is a dashing Escamillo. Frittoli is a moving & complete Micaela. The vibrato on held notes is wide, but not distracting.
All the supporting roles are good and Nezet-Seguin leads the orchestra in a fresh and spirited pace.
If this performance is released on DVD, it'll give the DVD from ROH with Antonacci and Kaufmann a good run as the deserted island recording of the opera.

Met Opera's simulcasts are all the best of live performance, feature film, and documentary, rolled into one. Elina is overwhelmingly beautiful and complex, raunchy and compelling, at once a playful child and skeptical feminist, unimpressed by Escamillo's prowess in the bullring, smitten with Don Jose's vulnerability. At least until his need to return home to his dying mother is eclipsed by Escamillo's popularity. Michaela's portrayal is dowdy and flat, the one sour note. Production design and costumes are superb. Renee Fleming as hostess is completely self-effacing, approachable, making opera accessible in a way it may not be to most of us. I will see the Met Opera simulcasts over and over again.

Fantastic! I could feel Bizet smiling down on this amazing performance! The entire cast was perfect! Nothing can come close to the great performances from the Metropolitan Opera! I used to think movies were not the media to view opera but this is definitely a wonderful opportunity to see the best in the world and feel like you are actually in the audience at the fabulous Met! I have twice been involved with the Lyric Opera of Chicago's productions of Carmen. One of which was with the wonderful Domingo. However, nothing can compare with what I have just seen.
Although I loved Julia Maginnes Johnson in the movie version with Domingo, Elina Garanca just knocked this one out of the park!
Previous Carmen notables have all been racheted down a knotch. She's magnificent.

Seeing Carmen many times, this production was the best ever. Elina was a magnificent singer and a wonderful actress and dancer. She was exactly what you would think Carman would be. She brought Carmen to life in the most complete and seductive way. Roberto was also magnificent. The death scene was outstanding. Carmen is the best 1st opera as in intro to opera. This production with the singing, acting, scenery, with everything would be a FANTASTIC 1st opera. Thank you Met and all the performers including the orchestra and behind the scenes people for always doing the spectacular. I can't wait for the next opera as they each get better and better. What a huge gift has been given us. I can't say bravo enough.

Wow! Carmen had it all. Elina Garanca was magnificnet. I cannot imagine a better Carmen. All the other principals were excellent as well. I was pleased to see Elizabeth Caballero as Frasquita. Wonderful production. This has spoiled going to live opera for me. The fact that wherever you sit you have a close up of expressions is just superb (as opposed to sitting with opera glasses and trying to make out faces from a distance). The interviews and comments entr' acte were very informative and enlightening. I can't wait for the performances of my other favorite operas to be broadcast.

first of all, Garanca is, in a word, fabulous. Not only does she look and sound incredible, she is always in the moment...focused, believable,...we always feel we are looking at Carmen, not some impersonator.
Unfortunately, Alagna fell into the operatic trap of generalized emotion and stock gestures. He mentioned in the interview that he found Jose hard to sing, and then proved it. We didn't see a tortured man who has ruined his life and others as well, but a singer struggling to reach the notes, with distorted rhythm, gulping breaths and little connection with his Carmen. A shame. Still, this is an incredible medium and a great addition to the arts scene. Bravo everyone. And Roberto...focus!

I have seen several performances of Carmen and this production eclipsed all of them. I don’t think a sexier or more vibrant interpretation of the title role is possible. A wonderful cultural experience. French tenor Roberto Alagna and Elina Garanca were an amazing couple with great chemistry. The sets, the music and the very dynamic and physical performances were fantastic. Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garancais is the hottest performer I’ve ever seen on a stage!

You wouldn't believe how fantastic this production was. The orchestra was spot on. Voices, staging, costumes all grand. And this in spite of the bombing and explosions going on in the theatre next to us........really an unfortunate distraction.

The best carmen I've seen. Elina Garanca was outstanding both for her singing and her acting. Other cast members were of equal quality and the replacent Escamillo for Mariusz Kwiecien was impressive in voice and definitely fit the role with charisma to spare. The final scene after Carmen's stabbing in which the set rotated to reveal the "stabbed" bull in the ring was quite uniquely appropriate.

At least this man. Her great voice, acting and dancing attained a level of dramatic perfection in live from the met Sunday. She was so at herself she smoothly rescued Roberto's clutzy mis-coordinations, as with the handcuffs, without missing a beat. I cannot imagine a greater Carmen than Elina Garanca's performance. I will gladly see this performance again if it is offered.

This is the best Carmen ever! Not only is Elena a magnificent singer, but she is also a wonderful actress and dancer. She brings Carmen to life in the most complete and seductive way. Roberto is amazing as well, and sings a Flower Song that will bring tears to your eyes. Definitely a great introduction to opera for those who are not familiar with the art form.

This was only the second opera I had ever seen, and it beats out the University production of La Boheme, hands down.
Elina was fabulous as Carmen, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes did a wonderful Escamillo. I was so happy he did so well, and on such little notice!
I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look we got with Renee Fleming-- seeing how the sets came together between acts, meeting the principle singers, and the choreographer.
This is a fabulous opera, cast and performed very well, and I love that is was broadcast in HD into a movie theatre. That way, even University students in Iowa, like, me, can see great opera.
Awesome experience! But next time, I'd go earlier to get a better seat.

The Metropolitan Broadcasts are a true gift to the global audience. The tickets are reasonably priced, considering that similar priced tickets at the Metropolitan Opera would put you in the 4th balcony. Someday they will improve the sound. Definitely not the same as being there. But it's thrilling to see this performances.

It's been so many years since I've been to the opera and I love Carmen. This was the MOST enjoyable way to return to the opera. The performances were top notch including the understudy who played Escamillio. The glimpses back stage before and during the performance just added to the pleasure. I would do this again with no hesitation.

The best Carmen I have ever seen. Elina Garanca who sang Carmen is glamorous, sexy, she can act, she can dance.....does it get any better than that ? Absolutely.....a wonderful new music Director from Canada, great choreography, ballet....fantastic chorus work....the greatest opera orch in the world...the kids were fantastic....this is a must see performance....fresh new and full of good musical energy...I hope the Met records this one for DVD sales.....it will be a winner for sure !!!!

The opera itself was superlative!! However, the HD process was less than great. It was a little "blurry" and not up to the standards we experienced in previous operas.

Wonderful way to attend the opera.....actually better because you get all of the back stage interviews and the magic of camera work to bring the performers closer to the audience to see more detail. The performance was superb.

The performance was the best of Carmen I've experienced. All the singers were excellent but Carmen was outstanding both vocally and as an actor. The only flaw was the venue. The show in my opinion was marred by the loud, rumbling, low-frequency noise entering the theater from the show in the adjoining theater.

From the conductor to the singers, sets, dancers - everything was exciting and extraordinarily well done. I've seen 5 Carmens over the years and this by far was the best in capturing the essence of the libretto. I'l probably go with another friend to the encore performance!!!
