This is about the best use of new technologies that I can imagine! Certainly our experience was larger than that of those in New York who paid much more for their tickets: we saw the conductor, the musicians, the sets, the costumes, the backstage, the scene shop, and heard the performers discuss their roles – none of which the audience members got to enjoy. Fabulous!

The production was very beautiful, the costumes were georgeous.
It would be nice if they could open anotherr theatre because future productions ( Carmen ) are already sold out. It would also be nice if there were reserved seating. My MOM is short and it would have been nice to have sat in the first row up BUT all the seats were already taken.

We attended our first Met Live in HD presentation yesterday and were awed by the sense of intimacy with the production we felt, which was due to the stunning cinematography and wise addition of backstage interviews during the intermissions. Although we often attend live symphony concerts, we wondered how we would make it through almost 5 hours of opera! The two intermissions allowed for plenty of stretching and the opportunity to attend an opera concert in comfortable clothes (and eat popcorn along the way!) also added to our enjoyment of this indescribably delicious production. From the other reviews, it seems we may have been spoiled by our first experience - but we will be more than happy to give another Live in HD opera a chance.

Der Rosenkavalier live in HD will remain in my memory a musical highlight in a life full of opera. Gorgeous to look at and to listen to, this Met production hit all the right notes. The only flaw (and this is stretching) was perhaps that Renee Fleming was so young and beautiful that Octavian's final choice was hard to believe. Susan Graham as Octavian was born to play this role. The backstage intermission segments were fascinating. I felt the Met graciously welcomed the movie audience as part of the total production by bringing us backstage. Thanks to the Met for a wonderful afternoon.

It just doesn't get any better than this! The final trio made chills run up my spine. The casting was as close to perfect as I can imagine and their ensemble was breathtaking. The best opera production I've ever experienced live or on screen! I'll see the encore screening if I can and regret that the final live performance is this Friday when I can't get to NYC to see it.

Der Rosenkavelier has always been one of my top 3-5 operas, along with Othello, Marriage of Figaro and Elisir d'Amore. It combines the human condition and humor with spellbinding orchestration and vocal virtuosity.
I have just seen the best Rosenkavelier of my life. Each character was perfect for the role both as actors and singers. I hate to single out any of the cast for fear of making readers think I am downplaying anyone.
To me, the Der Rosenkavelier leit motif is hauntingly beautiful. And what can be better than the trio at the end of Act III?
We often go to the Met, but now I am also hooked on Live from the Met in HD.

Anyone who loves the opera will be in heaven here. Fleming , Graham et al in their finest of hours. They make Strauss shine brightly.
Anyone looking to learn to appreciate opera could be very delighted by this performance. Despite it's length, the beautiful, no magnificent voices and wisdom imparted in Strauss' work are very compelling. Take a chance. Enjoy!

What a breathtaking performance of this Strauss opera! Renee Fleming may be the finest Marschallin I have heard since Elisabeth Schwartzkopf. I thought nobody would ever do Octavian as brilliantly as Tatiana Troyanos, but I was wrong; Susan Graham is just superb. The other singers were also wonderfully fine, the Met Orchestra was its superlative self and the overall effect left me in tears. Go see the encore!

If you missed the live broadcast, go see the Weds encore. My town last performed Der Rosenkavalier in 1994, so it was just a dream to see this exquisite Nat Merrill production with the best cast. The camera zooms in for the cinemacast to show the beauty of Renee Fleming highlighting the hair, makeup, and ornate costumes, as if it weren't enough to hear her sing The Marschallin in a voice so good it made me emotional. A must see for the sets and the costumes - you'll not be able to stop examining Der Rosenkavalier's gem studded outfit, described by Susan Graham during intermission as a disco ball (she actually makes it sound less a work of art than it is, crafted from head to toe).

It is not enough to say that the singing was heavenly, the orchestra superb, and the staging perfection. This was a company of REAL actors whose every expression (especially in HD) was revelatory or moving or laugh-producing.
How does your heart not break when, in the first act, you see the Marschallin (thank you Ms. Fleming for exquisite work) succumbing to the dread of the years to come. And how do you not suffer with Ocatavian (and thank you Ms. Graham for mesmerizing us all) as he is dismissed as one who will, one day, betray the one he loves. And you have to agree that Baron Ochs was wonderfully loathesome.
Thank you to all in the company. It was thrilling. Unglaublich.

This was my first-time experience with Met Live Opera, and am literally spellbound by it. It seems that the producers created a totally new kind of art that took all advantages of a live opera performance and successfully combined them with the art of cinema. The result is so incredibly amazing. Certainly, nothing can be compared to a visit to Met, however, cinema viewers are presented with much more than a spectator at Met. Close ups, details, elaborate cameras' movements make the performance more dynamic and move a viewer so close to the performers that the viewer has an illusion of being present on a stage.

Another splendid Met production, blessed by the lustrous voice of a beautifully costumed Renee Fleming. Few theatrical experiences are better. And there we were, sitting comfortably in fashionable sweats, munching, enjoying all the camera angles and backstage insights the live audience couldn’t see. I hope more (and much younger) people will come to this unique broadcast series and discover operatic art.

This is one of my favorite operas. This vintage production is exquisite; I enjoyed it at The Met in 1991 with Pavarroti as the Italian Singer. The 9 Jan 2010 performance was excellent, with a better cast for the most part, than before. The performances of the three principles were extraordinary. Thomas Allen was the best Faninal I have ever seen.
On a negative note, I recommend that the "closeups" be a little less close; we lose some of the illusion when we see each facial blemish.
I disagree with the "reviewer" who complained about early arrivers saving excessive numbers of seats. I arrived early to save seats and saw none of that of that excess at our theater. Perhaps the seating policy should be changed to reserved designated seats.

Yesterday afternoon 3 mini-theatres were full of opera fans who braved our unusually cold weather to watch one of our favorites, a live broadcast of, Der Rosenkavelier. This was a first for my husband and I, My holiday gift to him. The audience waited and waited for the performance to begin and were finally told that the sateliite feed was not being received. So major confusion and disappointment. We were able to exchange our tickets for the Encore screening on the 27th. Still not the same excitement as the a live performance.

Der Rosenkavalier is a wonderful story, about love in all of its aspects. The story is beautifully acted and sung to the glorious music of Richard Strauss, in this production at the Met. Whether you are young or old or in between, you will find elements in this opera that appeal directly to your sensibilities and your emotions. If you didn't see it, make sure you look for repeat showings and go. You will be well rewarded.

What a feast for the eyes and ears. Susan Graham and Renee Fleming were at the top of their vocal range. The Baron Ochs character was delightfully ribald and funny with an amazing voice. The character who played Sophie (who was last year's Gretel in Hansel and Gretel) also has a beautiful voice although she is supposed to be a rival in beauty to the Marchelilin played by Fleming and she is NOT. But her voice, blending with Fleming and Graham in the final trio was sublime.
I was struck by Graham's talent as an actress. She was just wonderful. Even if you don't speak German to sit there and listen to all that lush Strauss just wash over you is worth it.

I must admit, I'm more of a 'romance language' opera officianado but this production was still stellar in every way. Renee was her usual stunning self and Susan, besides her fantastic singing, she had the 17 yearold school boy body language down pat from head to toe. The costumes were also amazing -- so was the entire production. I also love the behind the scene interviews with the singers and the creative staff as well. I've learned from these interviews what detail work go into these productions. I'm so greatful to be able to see these HD productions for many reasons.
