What a feast for the eyes and ears. Susan Graham and Renee Fleming were at the top of their vocal range. The Baron Ochs character was delightfully ribald and funny with an amazing voice. The character who played Sophie (who was last year's Gretel in Hansel and Gretel) also has a beautiful voice although she is supposed to be a rival in beauty to the Marchelilin played by Fleming and she is NOT. But her voice, blending with Fleming and Graham in the final trio was sublime. I was struck by Graham's talent as an actress. She was just wonderful. Even if you don't speak German to sit there and listen to all that lush Strauss just wash over you is worth it.
This was a superb production with an amazing cast of singers. Without a doubt, Joseph Calleja has stormed onto the world opera stage with "vocal drama from a distant era, like we can hear on the old shellac recordings featuring the voices of the greatest of the great: Caruso, Gigli…" That he is so young and has so much potential is wonderful for those who realize that Domingo has retired and Pavarotti has really retired.
