Le Comte Ory

This production with this cast must be why HD was invented! Even people in the Met house wouldn't have been able to see the facial expressions that these comedians were able to employ while still singing brilliantly. (And the news of Juan Diego's first son being born a half hour before curtain was certainly not known to those at the Met.) The music was a re-write of Viaggio a Rhiems, but Rossini was known to steal from himself constantly; it was good material and the staging by Bart Sher made the most of his singers' skills. Bravi!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

One of Verdi's finest operas produced by one of America's finest opera houses with a magnificent cast! This is truly a modern opera, very dark and not at all a happy-ending kind of work, but the caliber of the performance here is so fine that it lifts the spirit with wonder. Poplavskaya in particular impressed with her range and control and sheer vocal beauty; when Renee Fleming is ready to start slowing down, there is a worthy diva to follow her. Only Anna Smirnova as Eboli seemed miscast; she's not ready for closeups and her voice is too unwieldy for such a seductive role, but she's not a disaster. The others are simply wonderful. Yes, "all is vanity" in the face of death, but what glorious singing. See the rebroadcast if you missed it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

What a breathtaking performance of this Strauss opera! Renee Fleming may be the finest Marschallin I have heard since Elisabeth Schwartzkopf. I thought nobody would ever do Octavian as brilliantly as Tatiana Troyanos, but I was wrong; Susan Graham is just superb. The other singers were also wonderfully fine, the Met Orchestra was its superlative self and the overall effect left me in tears. Go see the encore!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Turandot in HD from the Met

This was a wonderful performance of a repertory staple. Having seen this production in NYC numerous times when I was living there, I was surprised to see how dim the picture appeared. The singers, however, were sensational. Not only was Marina Poplaskaya (sp?) a moving revelation as Liu, but Maria Guleghina as Turandot was the finest I've heard since Birgit Nilsson, with a voice of powerful intensity. Even though this was electronically delivered, the size of her voice came through. Our hero was Marcello Giordani, one of the most reliable singing today. If the transmissions glitches drove you out of the live performance, I urge you to go back, see the encore performance; certainly the electronic problems will have been fixed by then.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
