Pros- 18th century London background very authentic. Good acting.
Cons- Little to do with Sherlock Holmes, never knew he was a karate kicking action hero type and the Watson character wasn't close to the the persona I envisioned. Shouldn't need rediculous special effects in a Holmes movie, just cheapens it and the clues were unclever and for the most part senseless.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

If you enjoy intelligent movies, and are easily bored with non-stop action movies with meandering, fuzzy, plot lines, you'll enjoy Sherlock Holmes, too. A masterful combination of dialogue, story, and action. One of the best of 2009.

I really enjoyed this movie. Excellent acting. Really good plot. I would like to see the sound be a little better. Some of the speech was hard to understand with all the noise. And some of the visual effects were not very believable. Overall, this was a very good movie. I always like Robert Downey, Jr.

I'm not a fan of adventure movies but I am of the Sherlock Holmes series. The movie was greater than I expected. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law play their characters so well! The plot was exciting, lots of action (which I don't genereally enjoy but it was awesome). I would definitly see it again. GO SEE IT!

I've always been a Guy Ritchie fan, however, I wasn't sure how Sherlock Holmes and his style would mesh but. I am happy to say that he was able to mix his style with a Sherlock Holmes story and deliver a homerun.
Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law turned in wonderful performances
The plot was every bit as intriguing, suspenseful and true to the Holmes legacy as one might hope; an enjoyable and largely faithful adaptation of Holmes.
And the SFX were perfect for the film, establishing a believable setting, adding to the enjoyment of the film, never distracting or leading one to believe the film was just an excuse for SFX.
Overall very entertaining, and worth seeing.

Have wanted to see this movie since I saw the first trailer, and it was better than I hoped. Engaging, textured story and characters, a showcase for how good Downey, Jr. can be. Doesn't take itself too seriously, and could be a great franchise for those of us who want substance in our plots. A movie for those who value actors, writers and camera work over computer programmers - there are some excellent special effects, but they do not take over the film.

I really enjoyed this film. I was worried that the long running time would have me checking my watch, but it moved along pretty well and I barely noticed the length. The two stars are fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing if they can maintain the quality into the inevitable sequel.

At first I didn't expect it to be like it was going to become. Downey Jr. did a great role of Sherlock Holmes. Its what any family would want to see. For people that like mystery action and something out of the ordinary this is a MUST SEE!

i don't understand why this movie is getting such good reviews or why RDJ is winning awards. I actually fell asleep twice while watching this yesterday. While not as bad as "It's Complicated" this is defintely not a movie i would encourage people to go see.

We went to see a movie for pure entertainment value last night and that's exactly what we got. The visuals were well done and the movie had a consistent feel. The dialogue and events were a little trite but cute. The action was engaging but well beyond believable (as I think it often should be in an action movie as it keeps one drawn in). The plot was pretty good, too. It wasn't a great movie but it was a good movie! I'd recommend that others see this movie if they want to go be entertained. Movie of the year it is not but I would choose to go spend 2 hours and 19 minutes seeing it again if I knew then what I know now. It isn't a bad choice of entertainment.

This is not Sherlock Holmes. A Captain Jack superhero but not Sherlock Holmes. Behind the special effects, fast dialogue, not quite believable chemistry experiments that Holmes Borg-clicks back to us at a pace so fast we won't detect that they don't quite hang together logically, lies a very thin plot. Whatever. I am longing for the subtle pyschological narrative that truly is Sherlock Holmes. And what was with the Holmes/ Watson relationship? Something for everyone in the audience- straight or not! Great acting by RD, Jr. tho. Great set design and atmosphere. But, hey, can we turn DOWN the sound a bit? Ouch my ears.

I gave it 2 stars because Jude Law was SSOOO sexy in this movie but it was SOOO BORING and half the time you couldn't understand what the the heck Robert Downey Jr was saying everyone else you could understand but him he was mumbling like Victor Newman on Y&R. If you've been a fan of Sherlock your whole life and you love London, this is your movie. The cinematography is wonderful, the pace is headlong, and the interplay between Holmes and Watson is delightful. Readers of the books will recognize some of the dialogue, straight from the original stories. Watching Robert Downey Jr. is a joy.

Good movie, lots of action but as another person commented quite a bit of witty banter between Holmes and Watson and with the accents not always easy to catch. And even spoken normally, it seems quicker than reading it off the page, so must pay attention. Otherwise very enjoyable, wonderful cinematography!

If you enjoy sly humor mixed in with action this movie is for you; however, you do have to pay attention to the dialog as some of the wittiest lines are delivered quickly, appear off the cuff and can be easily missed.
I totally enjoyed Holmes' and Watson's characterizations as they make these two much more human and appealing (than did Doyle) by adding the personal to the brilliant and, in this case, violent.

This was a creative steampunk action film with a different take on Holmes and Watson. Admittedly, I really didn't like this Holmes much, he was dark and self-indulgent. Watson was petulant, and on again, off again in support of Holmes, and his girlfriend/fiance was annoying.
The special effects carried this film and were they spectacular! The storyline was thought provoking and the antagonist was appropriately evil. Definitely a must see.
