A complete set-up for the sequels. Dark and dreary. Never in doubt that the main characters would survive, no matter how implausible. Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law are favorites, which made this even more of a shame - Rachel McAdams was over matched and badly cast. The actress who played the fiance had some bad advice about silicone in her top lip.
I prefer the Basil Rathbone series, although the Watson character was infinitely more believable and interesting in Ritchie's version.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I was skeptical when I heard they were making a Sherlock Holmes movie. But I must say I was impressed with the film and everyone in it. It was fun, exciting, and thrilling. Robert Downey Jr was superb as the amazing sleuth and he and Jude Law played perfectly off each other. It was nice to see a fresh take on the character. The end left a wide opening for a sequel. All I can say about that is... WHEN? :)

The movie was action packed and followed the Sherlock Holmes book properly. The older versions showed a watered down character. This movie has both characters portrayed with all their strengths and weaknesses with a flair that only a director like Guy Richie can bring to a movie.
It was action packed with enough hints as to the real intention of the movie so as not to overtell the movie.
We are looking forward to the sequel.

An inarguably entertaining movie and worth seeing just for the thoroughly steampunk vision of London. What I really loved in this movie was the way Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. expressed the relationship between Watson and Holmes. Whether you want to see it in a homoerotic context or whether you want to see it as simply the deep friendship of two men who know each other very well, their portrayals gave great depth to their characters. My summary: I didn't love this movie, but there was enough to it to make me glad I saw it.

Those who are fans of the original Doyle stories will not recognize this portrayal as particularly accurate. This is more of a caricature of the original. That said, for what it is the film was enjoyable with great chemistry between Downey and Law as Holmes and Watson. While the Jeremy Brett portrayal is still my personal favorite, this was a fun piece of entertainment. Sets were great, and the soundtrack was typical of Zimmer's great work.

I don't what it is about Robert Downey Jr., but he has an uncanny way of making subtle, witty humor absolutely hilarious. He and Jude Law were great together, and the not-so-subtle play on the perceived homoerotic relationship between Holmes and Watson made for a very funny duo.
Aside from that, the plot was well-constructed, the dialogue was well-written, the action scenes were supreme, the cinematography made for a unique and refreshing atmosphere, and the "mystery" was pulled off very well.
If I had to take issue with anything, it'd probably be Rachel McAdams's acting. It seemed to me like she was there for s*x appeal and as a set up for Holmes' witty dialogue.
As a whole I thought it was a quality film.

The movie starts off on a good note and pace, and promises to give a fresh new feel to a classic set of characters, but somewhere in the middle the movie falters and the story, characters and entertainment goes no where.
I may be in the minority when I say that midway through the movie, I wished I was at work on a Sunday rather than sitting in the theater watching this film.

Robert Downey Jr was absolutely brilliant. Jud e Law was a very welcome change from the old bumbling Dr. Watson. The time period was very believable with the dark London photography method.

This movie has a very strong cast and is visually engaging - costumes, sets, effects are terrific! If you have read the book, try not to think too much about that - this Holmes is much more like James Bond than the original Conan Doyle character. Just enjoy the hero's "Iron Man"-style tricks and the repartee among the characters. The plot moves right along.

This movie was fast paced and fun! It doesn't feel like 2 hours and I didn't look at my watch at all.
Robert Downey Jr. is compelling as quick witted Holmes and Jude Law is more than his match as "tough man" Watson. You can't decide who you love more. The bantering scenes between the two are memorable and funny.
The villain is creepy enough to startle just by appearing. The twists you won't see coming.
It's beautifully made with fantastic acting. If you liked "The Prestige" you'll like this x 10.
GO SEE IT!

I thoroughly enjoyed this film! If you liked movies such as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or Van Helsing, you will certainly enjoy Sherlock Holmes.
The plot is very well thought out, the dialogue is quick and witty, and the action is non-stop. Downy and Law work very well together.
The music is amazing too...congrats Hans Zimmer.

Downey infuses all his characters with personality. He brings just enough humor to the roles he plays to ensure a multi-dimensional character.
Law is able to seamlessly play off of Downey. They are like old friends who have been through combat together. .
Rachel McAdams is beautiful and Sherlock falls for all her tricks. She is so darn interesting AND pretty he just doesn't care if she gets him in trouble!
The story line worked well. Enough detail so you fell comfortable with who the charracters are, plus contained enough action to really keep the story going. Guy Ritchie knows how to deliver a story and Holmes is no exception.

I think it was a very well done movie, however did not know it had such satanic and evil undertones, I would have liked to know ahead of time, now letting someone else know. Fight scenes great, Robert Downey Jr was great in this movie, mystery and story line great.

The issue for Sherlock Holmes fans is that the script requires Holmes to be a cross between Jackie Chan and Antonio Banderas, plus Doyle's Holmes. If you don't care about the original character of Holmes, then this is a great action flick rivaling Butch Cassidy and Sundance. If you do care about the original Holmes, you may choose not to like it. I thought it worked, well enough, as an action packed Victorian drama. The blending of stage props, animation, and the whole cinemagraphic mix, was very impressive. Watson, Jude Law, was played very well, perhaps the best of the four stars. Mark Strong doesn't quite make it as the villain. Very enjoyable and I am looking forward to the sequel, where we get to meet Professor Moriarity!

The action never stopped. I do think Hollywood took some liberties with Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Character, and I am sure the Brits will object to the change.
It was a good movie, but I like the original characterization of Holmes.
Sometimes you just can’t improve on what is great already.

This is an all around excellent movie. Tremendous true portrayal of my Brother Sherlock. His character is true to form. Sir ACD must be proud, wherever he is!
Robert Downey, Jr. is SH incarnate! Wonderful acting on his part as well as the other characters, his esteemed life long friend Dr. Watson, Lestrade and the ladies. Except for the boxing and Blackwood, all the references are true to ACD 50+ short stories, including the reference to "Alice in Wonderland". Choice!
Directing was superb as the music and the story, the writers excelled, even though is a "new" adventure for SH and never written by ACD.
This movie is a MUST SEE! I am eagerly awaiting another adventure, this time with Sherlock's long time nemesis, Professor Moriarty!

I loved this movie! Robert Downey Jr. was

True Sherlock Holmes afficianados will not recognize the character. But in terms of an action movie that crosses over between the sexes, there's something here for everyone. And just maybe, when the movie is done, a new generation will pick up the books and discover the power of deductive reasoning. The scenery of old world London is quite wonderful and the actors made the movie come to life. Looking forward to the next movie installment...

Excellent film. Well written and acted by all characters, main and supporting. Guy Ritchie is one of my favorite directors and he didn't disappoint here. Love the stop motion and other effects that are very time altering. You don't realize you have been watching a movie for over 2 hours. Better than the other so-called Holiday blockbusters for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this modern day take on a classic. The storyline was creative, while maintaining its values and time period . Both Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law did their roles well.
