I thought it was pretty well done. It was like having really great seats at the theater in NY. I sometimes wished that the camera would back off and include the whole person instead of just a closeup because the dancing and movement is part of the play. Otherwise, it was wonderful.

I have been an avid RENT fan for many years. I've seen the Broadway production eight times, and I enjoyed the feature film release. But, the ability to witness the live performance in such incredible detail, was a gift. Jonathan Larson crafted a modern masterpiece, and the only comforting aspect of his untimely death is knowing how intensely he impacted the lives of countless fans. This film marks the end of an era. I had not gotten the chance to see RENT on broadway but must have watched the movie thousands of times.You could truely see the drive and devotion of the actors after seeing it on the big screen.A fantasttic personal look at the stage. Im sad that RENTs performances are finished but this film will continue to keep the memory and excitment alive. Really wonderful to see over and over again and even more wonderful for the aid broadway fans.

It was quite amazing to see the show work in film version, even if it was just a taped version of the Braodway show, as opposed to the horrible film version made a couple years ago. The camera angles were very stimulating and made it like watching a new show that seemed slightly familiar, so many new points of view. Mimi was the best I have ever seen and Roger was dreamy. The rest of the cast grew on me but overall some of ther best 20 bucks I have spent recently.

As a huge Renthead I knew I could not miss out on this opportunity to see Rent filmed on Broadway. I think the acting/singing/show was amazing. My only criticism was the actual filming. I sometimes found the camera too close to the characters and there were way too many camera changes. It took a while for me to get use to the filming and into the show. I wish it had made me feel more like I was at the actual stage production. Because of this, I will not see this again in theaters nor buy the DVD. I would love to see future Broadway shows in the movies, but with a tweak in the filming and please please never again follow objects as they are throwing them!

It is not often that you get to watch a live performance of a Broadway show in the movie theater.I was blown away right from the start.I enjoyed the movie and have watched it numerous. I only saw the actual performance once. Can’t complain as I was in the front row. The live film was just as awesome and in some ways better. You were able to watch a performance through somebody else’s eyes. The director captured the raw emotion that you can only find in theater. Movie actors don't have that. You can only get that from a certain level of Broadway actors. You find the so moving that 90% of the viewers would applaud at the end of songs. Bring your children it opens dialogue. So go see this performance before its gone.

I saw this show on Broadway a few years back and I must say that some of the changes that they made to the music was amazing. I loved the improvisation and the ornamentals on the phrases. Plus it is my favorite show and am sad to see it go. But it went out with a bang!

So I have seen Rent 70 times( not rounding up) at the theater. A few friends of mine use to be in, so I went a lot. I did not know what to expect when i was going to the Movie. it took me a little to get use to all the close up shots. Once I did, I loved it... I thought it was great. Was it as good as seeing it in the theatre? No, you dont get the energy as much. However i took a friend that had never seen it and she loved it.:)

For my birthday (09/25/08), I decided to treat myself to watch it in the theaters. Although I was never blessed to see it on Broadway, and all I knew was the theatrical version, I loved experiencing this masterpiece like this. I may never be deemed a true Renthead, but I love Rent regardless. I loved seeing the contrasts between the theatre and movie version. I understand the storyline much better now. Even my mother, who never knew about Rent at all, said it was good. It was a memorable birthday. Believe me, this is well worth the money.

If you've always wondered what all the fuss was about....GO SEE THIS FILM. I'm a huge RENT fan, I have seen the show live on Broadway on a number of occasions, as well as seeing a # of touring companies. I saw the movie in the Ziegfield in NYC when it was released! That said, I was thoroughly impressed with this movie. It was extremely well done, the close-ups were amazing and the characters were spot-on! I'm sad that I didn't get to see it live one last time, but I think that this production was able to convey the emotion in a way that (unfortunately) the movie was not. We all know the music is amazing...but to really "get" this show...you've got to have a connection. And, these guys made that happen.

I have been a big fan of RENT since it's birth in 1996. I have now seen the stage show 3 times as well as the film. Every performance was moving and amazing each in it's own way. The recording of the Broadway experience was no different. I had high expectations and this surely surpassed them. I have seen many live recordings of broadway shows (meaning, those legally available) and this has to be the best one to date. I can only hope that the producers will be smart enough to release this on DVD. This is something EVERYONE should experience at least once. 'No day but today...'

Having seen the show and only this cast on broadway, I thought the film was great! For those who never saw in live, this is your opportunity to feel the emotion of what RENT is all about. I just saw RENT onscreen last night. It was amazing. It was the last live performance in NYC when it closed on Broadway. It was very emotional to see the end that way. It definitely puts the commercial movie to shame. I know it will be fantastic on DVD. For those of you who have never seen it, this is a great way to do it. Of course all the other patrons at the movies were longtime Rentheads as well which shared in the excitement and helped me feel that I was in the theater on Broadway. It resonated with me in ways differently than it ever has. To me, that is the beauty of RENT. It touches the soul and gives hope and a sense of healing. "No day but Today".

I saw Rent on Broadway twice. I loved the show and was sad to see it close. Well, I was glad to see that one of the last performances would be filmed and my partner and I immediately got tickets.
It was truly spectacular. The cinematography conveyed the emotion and power of the story in a way that I could not have even imagined. I felt as if I was there, in the front seat, and I was touched deeply. The story is timeless and I hope that it can somehow be nominated for an Oscar. Very highly recommended!!!

Although the New York that Jonathan Larson wrote about no longer exists (Alphabet City is condos and the AIDS virus is more manageable) It's important to remember the ideals and the fire that the artists in this show exemplify and the need to create, that transcends reason sometimes! And the beautiful theme that family isn't always defined by bloodlines, family is what you make of it sometimes. It was shot almost like a longform music video and it was great that as many times as I've seen it live, it was fantastic to see the little details as far as expressions by the actors go and whatnot and it really added to the story for me. It almost makes me wish that they had come out with this film instead of the movie version a few years ago!

A must see for anyone who loves this show and the story that it tells. This honestly should have been the movie release from a few years ago as it really focuses on all the characters and the angle they tell their stories. I have seen the production 4 times live (5th time coming in March) and went to see it last night with a friend who has seen it 18 times! She even noticed details due to this movie that we haven't seen before. It is probably the strongest cast since the original as well. I wish it was out longer cause I would definetly see this many, many times. GO!!!

You loose a lot in translation from stage to screen. Some busier scenes (Rent) suffered from it where as others (Christmas Bells) seem to have a more dramatic touch. The more intimate scenes (Light My Candle, One Song Glory) really shine. Sound is lacking, which is unfortunate. In this sense, you can't get a true feel for the energy and sparkle of live theater. For those who want to hold one for one last time or for those who have yet to witness, it's a good way of getting your fix. It portrays Rent well enough, and gives everyone outside of NY or the Tour stops a chance to witness Rent, particularly, the Final Show. Which is better, Broadway or Movie? Answer, Broadway! HOWEVER, still see it in movie theaters, it is worth admission.

If you're a rent fan you can't miss this show. The cinematography is hard to watch though. I'm sure they did the best they could for a live stage performance but you'll quite often find you're zoomed in on someone's back, arm, etc.

The camera shots were great. I have seen the play several times, but this was the first time I could see the emotions played out on the faces of the actors. Renee Goldsberry (Mimi) is amazing, as is the rest of the cast. I hope they make this a DVD. A definite must for all Rentheads.

I have never seen the show, only the film. And I was very familiar with the soundrack. I had high hopes going to see Rent (live on Broadway) and was absolutely not dissapointed. Very high energy performance, with moving and touching moments.
