Sean Penn will be nominated for an Oscar, I have no doubt. He makes you forget that you are watching a masterful actor...he is that good. Harvey Milk came alive on screen. He made me laugh and cry in all the right ways and places. He is so inspiring. He made me remember why we all have to continue fighting for major civil/human rights legislation and everyday positive treatment. He was the enlightened one of the Gay Rights Movement, bringing everyone together to make the world a better place. And that is no exaggeration. Kudos to Gus Van Sant. Wow.

This movie drove me to tears at the end thinking of some of my own family members who are probably gay but still closeted. The acting is wonderful right down the line, especially Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch. The movie doesn't pull any punches about the sexual profligacy of gay men who turn out to be unintended heroes. Clearly the gay rights fight is an on-going one, with the echoes of the Proposition 6 fight, a centerpiece in the movie, resonating right now with the failure of Proposition 8 in California.

This is simply the most liberating movie with a gay theme I have ever seen. Stellar in every way. One of Gus Van Zant's greatest movies, and he may have just done the definitive gay movie, about real people who aren't conflicted or anguished, like Broke Back Mountain. An excellent depiction of the man and the times. We need another Harvey Milk - the movement is suffering today without him. Saw it with an overwhelming straight audience. There was absolute silence at the end, everyone was deeply affected. Powerful, moving piece. Not really a Sean Penn fan, but he WAS HARVEY MILK. WOW. Amazing. A movie that does not depend on explosions, LOUD soundtracks or violence, only GREAT ACTING and SENSITIVE STORY. Why is it rated R? Two men kissing on the screen is MUCH LESS OFFENSIVE than the other gratuitous violence we are exposed to. This movie should easily be put on a list for "SENSITIVITY TRAINING" for all teachers, all police, and even all parents and students.

My review is short and simple. The film's director, Gus Van Sant, does an incredible job of bringing this very personal story to the screen. By mixing archival footage with masterfully created images re-telling the story of Harvey Milk's life and work, this film is a huge success. One that brings energy and enthusiasm to the screen and in turn, it's whole audience. The crowd applauded at the end of this movie, a rarity in today's day and age.

This is an extremely well-made film that tells a very important story. Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and the rest of the cast deliver outstanding performances. Gus Van Sant should also be commended for effective direction.
Anyone who enjoys/is moved by this film should also check out Rob Epstein's wonderful Oscar-winning documentary from 1984, "The Times of Harvey Milk."
At a time when gays, lesbians, and our supporters across America are fighting (generally unsuccessfully) for equality in marriage rights, it is good to have the renewed opportunity to be inspired by the bravery and tenacity of Harvey Milk.

Sean Penn is so fantastic in portraying Harvey Milk that it would be a travesty of justice if he were to receive any less reward than best actor of the year. The movie's impact was clearly evidenced by the hush of the audience during the entire screening, as all were actually absorbed into the film. Not a dry eye was seen as we departed the theater. What an emotional journey. The movie is unforgettable and monumental.

This movie made me realize how lucky I am to be living in an era that's a lot more tolerant of GLBTQ's. I've never been in such an age-mixed audience - half were around my age, born when Milk died, and half were older and were reading the headlines as they happened. Sean Penn truly clarified that he is an artist in this film. He played a queen so well, I felt like I was watching a true gay "scene" with this movie acted by, I assume, primarily heterosexual actors. I believed Sean was Harvey and though the cinematography was beautiful, at times I felt like I could have been watching a documentary, that's how real the acting and script were. As a lesbian feminist who sees an enormous void left since street activism has all but nearly disappeared, I appreciated the history, relationships, humanity and power of Harvey's story. The ending is a tragic part of our homophobic history. We lost a great leader with Harvey's death. I hope that more than just the Gay and Straight Ally community will see this film.

Amazing acting by Sean Penn - Academy Award worthy. This film is very timely for the Obama era and chant of "hope" and for Prop. 8.
James Franco was also exceptional as Milk's lover and he didn't play it overtly gay - showing that not all gay men are "queens".
The film says a lot about freedom of rights, although I imagine at that time (70s) it was difficult for people to accept the openness and outrageousness of the gay movement. Thank goodness we've progressed beyond that....I think!
Don't miss this film. Even though it's long, it's worth staying with it.

Excellent film. Will go again, and with more friends this time. Spread the word about this movie!!! It is THAT good. And, although Harvey and Mayor Mascone were killed, the film manages to move you in all kinds of positive ways...such as to become politically active or to join a cause. Quite inspiring. Thank you Gus Van Sant for another fine movie. :)

Was inspirational. During a time where rights have been stripped from the community, this movie shows you, that we need to stand up and have our voices heard. We can not forget what has happened to us.

I've never been a Sean Penn fan, but his performance in this film was incredible. The entire movie was so well done. It gives a sense of history, and eerily overlaps the events of today.

Having lived through this movie's events, I was surprised learn some of the details of Harvey Milk's life.
I thought the movie was EXCELLENT for heterosexuals who are just becoming aware of the problems caused by gay people's second-class citizen status--and younger gay people.
The entire cast did a great job of capturing the moment, but all in all, this hardened older gay man hopes this movie will inspire people to rent "The Life And Times Of Harvey Milk," which, I think, captures in original footage the tragic events surrounding this part of our history.
As a person who lost his STATE job for refusing to become straight, Roman Catholic, and married, I see there is still LOTS more to do.

Although this movie takes place in the 70's it is remarkably current. The style captures the time and feel of the 70's and the direction is stylized and pointed. The performances are remarkably fantastic! Sean Penn will most definately receive another Oscar nomination. James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin and Diego Luna also all give fantastic performances as well as the entire cast. A very moving incredible film.
